It's gonna be hard to find ones that aren't dried up. For one there is no way of knowing if they are since you would have to tear one open to see, and also I'm not sure if it would show up on an impedance sweep.

I had a 4" component set in '96 that I used for about a year, then stored them away in an air conditioned closet for about ten years. Thinking I would never use them again, craziness hit me and I decided to rip one open. The fluid had dried out and turned into a pasty tar like consistency. That's how I found out about the problem. And these were bought at a reputable Circuit City like retailer here called Incredible Universe. Guess what I'm getting at is I would not risk it unless you reeeeeally gotta have them.

Does this apply to all older tweeters or only specific ones with a certain fluid? Would you hesitate buying older mids the same way?

Can't say for sure, never looked into that or remember ever hearing about it. Though, I have noticed a shift away from the use of ferrofluid on highend tweeter in the past decade.

A quick search came up with this thread. It appears that it is a problem for any tweeter that used it.

As for the mids, I would not hesitate. Mine were pristine. Partly due to the use of rubber surround over foam, along with the poly cones.
