Default AudioFrog GS690 + GS42 ??

Just wondering if anyone is running these in a "3-way" style setup (GS690 midbass, GS42 mids/highs)? Pros, cons, impressions?

You'd need a tweeter with the gs42. I don't think it was ever intended to be more than just a midrange. A Dayton nd20 would mount nicely in your factory pillar locations.

Isn't the GS42 a coaxial?

Yep lol. Sounds like the OP is trying to run the GS42 like a “point source” driver and i don’t think it’s intended to be...

That was my thought, yes.

From AF's website:
"The GS42 can be used as a full range speaker or combined with a GS60 in an active system."

I don't see why it wouldn't also pair well with the GS690?

Yeah it should pair great as a point source since it's a coaxial and the 690 is an insanely good candidate both as a dedicated midbass and in a 2-way with tweeter if you desire. I think it really shines as strictly a midbass though because it takes quite a bit of tuning to really get it right with a tweeter but that's true with any traditional 2-way setup for the most part unless you get lucky. It is car audio after all where you're tuning more for the "room" than you are for the speaker.

From Andy:

There aren't any "point source" drivers. The GS42 and a GS690 are a great combo for cars in which those fit.

The reason there aren't any point source drivers is because in car audio speakers, the tweeter is ALWAYS mounted on top of the woofer's pole piece. Every time.

They are all coaxial drivers.

There are benefits and detriments to this arrangement. The detriments are intermodulation distortion because the moving woofer cone is the baffle for the tweeter at the lowest frequencies the tweeter plays. This condition is worse on axis than off axis.

The other potential detriment is that for a small midrange, the tweeter has to be really small to fit inside the woofer's voice cool former. That compromises tweeter power handling and necessitates a higher crossover. Depending on the size of the woofer, than can create a hole in the off axis sound. That hole will show up on the RTA and the tuner will likely boost a little. That makes the on axis sound worse and applies more power at a frequency where the speaker is least likely to handle it. Blown tweeters.

The benefit is that there's only one speaker to mount. The coaxial arrangement also has one other benefit and that's uniform off axis response in the horizontal and vertical planes. It may not be great response, but its the same.

That's why some pro speakers for public address and music fill in restaurants, etc use a coaxial--because all the listeners are located off axis and it helps with intelligibility for everyone within earshot.

So I guess the answer to the OP’s question is yes, it will make a great pairing

MrGreen83, thanks for that info. I'm still just trying to explore all my options for upgrades.

Does anyone happen to know if AF has off-axis graphs? They only show one graph on their site for each speaker, with no exact details, so I'm assuming it's for on-axis response.
