Default Hearing test?

Poll: When was the last time you had an official hearing test?

Through research, a majority of the population listens to music at a decibel level that leads to temperary or permanent hearing loss. I find it strange how people worry about and prevent losing the rest of there 4 basic senses, but neglect hearing protection and precaution.

Outside of a hospital, you can not go anywhere without someone blaring music at unsafe levels. From personal experience it seems to be correlated around the Rap/hip-hop, Rock/metal, and electronic music genre listening crowd.

No clue here......I don't hear music blaring anywhere I go except at concerts and the occasional stop light. Do you live/work next to a concert venue or something???

I figured it out.....dude, take off your headphones.

I have them every year. Im in a cancer research study that tests tons of stuff every year to document what cancer treatment does to people later in life. Had bone cancer when I was 19 then throat cancer when I was 30. Radiation from the first treatment gave me throat cancer. Doh
Anyway. My ears compare to most 41yr Olds but I have bad ringing. She said it was from one of the chemos I had. I'm pretty sure that's why I like the morel tweeters. They don't bother me as much. Oh yeah. I'm one of the ones who has listened to loud music all his life. From headphones to klipshorns to concerts. So it's surprising my hearing is still in tact.

I'm sure my hearing is beat to hell in some way. I've done too many loud things throughout my life without protection for it not to be. Haven't had a hearing test since elementary school. If I'm in a noisy environment someone could be looking right at me talking and my brain can't process what they're saying.

In the spirit of "K-pop sucks" usual responses...
Why would anyone waste their money on a pointless hearing test, if you can hear your music you're good to go. Hearing tests are just a money grab.

I had my hearing tested about 3-4 months ago. My ears are better than the normal 40 year old male they said. I am able to hear up to about 15k before I start losing it. This is astonishing because I have been DJing for 20+ years and going to very loud clubs.

I just ran my own self test with signal gen app and can hear to about 17500 Hz at full volume. No need to go to a doctor for that test.

A real hearing test uses a standard volume. You can hear 17500 but it probably starts to drop off lower than that.

I used to go every year, I have not gone this year yet, but as of last year, at 50 I could still hear 18,500, but at about a 1.5dB loss from where it was when I was 18 years old. It's starting to go a bit, but is still better than 98 percent of the population.

I haven't had mine tested in quite a long time.

My wife does more often due to hearing loss, especially in her right ear. In fact we are headed to Stanford on Thursday for a consultation on potential surgery (her second) to try to correct some of the loss. She just had a hearing test last Thursday in preparation for the consultation. Since last August her right ear has dropped 20dB @ 3kHz. I was shocked to see a dramatic change in such a short period of time.

Funny this question came up - I was going to ask doc for a referral next time I see him. I'm positive I have hearing loss. I have tinnitus and have to concentrate much harder to understand people in a loud environment than I used to.

Goddam dude...no idea what caused that kind of severe hearing loss; but I genuinely feel for your wife man...I hope the doc's can do something to fix that up all the best man.

I had hearing tests all the time for work (when I worked). No hearing loss at all. Metallica concerts, played and gigged in bands when I was younger, to this day still have the occasional drum session without ear muffs.

Love it when an OP drops a grenade for no apparent reason and then takes off. Are you totally ignorant or something? That kid that pulls up next to you at the lights with his 'doof doof' is nowhere near as loud as the lawnmower, any number of power tools you'd have in your garage, the classical music that comes out of your home stereo...

...oh wait. That type of music is not played at unsafe levels. My bad. Whilst he was alive I was privileged enough to hear Pavarotti open up his lungs to 'O soave fanciulla'. F*** ME that had some decibels on it. Big girls blouse grandpa.

Reverse...Not usually...

Sound deadening is better than more power.
And some appreciation that lower volumes are OK is a good start.

When the SPL meter says upwards of 100dB one should be a bit concerned.
I think 90dB is more like what OSHA says.
Most speakers rated at ~87-92 dB at 1W, and most amps THD rated at 1W is a clue as to safe listening levels.

We met with the doc at Stanford yesterday. It was a great visit/consultation and we're both very hopeful. I was absolutely fascinated during the visit. They had multiple monitors on the wall and being able to see everything he looked at and have him walk us through what he was seeing was really cool.

Added bonus, we got to have lunch with some SQ friends at the old Apple campus and go to the Visitors Center at the new Apple Park campus while we were up there.

Much appreciated. We don't know for sure what the initial cause/causes are for the hearing loss, but the doctor has identified multiple potential contributing factors.

In our case, we are pretty hopeful for a reversal. Not 100% reversal, but certainly an improvement. The doctor was awesome, and is leading the way on some research that could have a huge impact in his field. Especially where it relates to juvenile ear infections and hearing loss in third world countries.

My wife has decided to move forward with surgery to correct four issues. I won't get into the nitty-gritty, but the doc placed odds of 70-75% chance of improvement, 20% chance of no change in hearing, and about a 5% chance (because there are always possibilities for negative outcome) that her hearing may get worse.

The alternative to surgery is a lifetime of using a hearing aid. This still may be the case depending on the outcome of the surgery. Or, over time even if the surgery is successful. Essentially, this is her last shot at surgery on the ear. I'm glad it is with this doctor at Stanford.

The surgery is going to be at least a couple months out, but if I remember, I will post up here about the outcome.
