Default I want to stream music services through my usb

Spotify says you camt stream thier music through your phones usb due to licensing issues.
That sucks. Seems like someone is trying to stop them from getting that usb quality.

Are there any streaming services that work through galaxy usb or is it strictly music on you phone which I would just use a usb stick like I already am.

I thought android auto used usb for audio no matter what service you are using. Maybe I'm wrong.

Edit: Sorry...just noticed you’re not using iPhone.

Does iTunes count? I have a subscription, and just download any album I like to my phone. There’s definitely a difference in the quality between a song downloaded to the phone versus one streamed from iTunes. For $9.95 per month, I have access to unlimited music. I have about a thousand or so that I’ve purchased...the rest are downloaded with my subscription. I use USB exclusively.

Yes - Spotify, Pandora and Amazon music (among others) all stream via USB with Android Auto (all AndroidAuto-compatible apps uses USB for audio).

I've found that Amazon Music is about the best quality, for what it's worth.

I haven't tried android auto. I dont like it. I was hoping to be able to stream youtube red directly through the usb. I suppose I could try android auto. I just hate being locked out of my phone.
I understand the safety aspect but ha ing to pull over and shut it off if I need to text someone a picture or something is beyond aggravating to me. I don't text and drive but trying to back out of android auto at red lights then get it going again before the light turns green sucks.

I hear ya... I'm not a huge fan of AndroidAuto either. I think I'd probably be happier if I could just mirror my phones screen instead (which you can do with some hacks, but it's very hack-ish).

The problem that i have is that the AndroidAuto apps have a "watered down" interface that makes using the apps harder than it should be. To me, it's almost more dangerous since you're constantly trying to figure out how to do something in the "watered down" app that you could do easily in the "regular" app. :-)

There is a whole now AndroidAuto interface rolling out now though, which should make some things easier to use.

You can start android auto and exit out while it's still running. I usually y don't but if you exit out and spotify is playing everything on the phone still works as usual. Text and spotify. The only thing that's forced is maps. If you exit out and hit maps on your phone it re opens aa.

I'd say Tidal is best quality, but you're paying twice as much at $20 and the app still needs work in androidauto. IE, it doesn't always remember where you left off so you have to load your playlist again. If it does remember, it starts at the beginning of the song not where you paused. And it doesn't allow you to see/list what is in your playlist - you have to skip through from the beginning until you get what song you want. SO don't make big playlists. Especially since it always forgets where you were

My concerned with tidal is I mostly listen electronic music.80 percent dance maybe 10 percent rock and the other 10 percent various. Most of it from the 90s. I dont do much pop or rap.

For this reason I use youtube red the most. It has almost anything you can think up
I don't think tidal would be the right choice for my taste in music but I must admit I haven't researched

Yeah you should check it out. Tidal has everything. Including the biggest stereotype and stigma in the streaming industry.

Just because I have 2000+ posts doesn't mean I have learned anything.

I don't use Tidal mainly because of the cost... I get Amazon Music for free with Amazon Prime, which is why I use it instead. It has great selection and excellend sound quality (better than Pandora and Spotify).

So tidal has a free trial. I tried it and its super quiet compared to YouTube red. I turned off the normalize and it made no difference. I've been jumping back and forth between youtube music apps and tidal and over all tidal is quiter on every track with normalize disabled.
I'm talking likely close to 6db quieter.

Also It did not have the first 4 tracks I searched for.

Another thing that bugs me is requires almost perfect spelling to find something. YouTube is much more forgiving there.

Tidal does sound better but I cant hear a difference between normal and hifi but that could be the tracks I'm listening to. They may very well be originally encoded in mp3.
I'll have to check some known source material. For $30 a month they are crazy. I may keep standard def for $10 a month if I can gear a difference and figure our a way to stop it from being so quiet.

That's really interesting. I've been curious about Tidal but figured it's higher bitrate would be lost on my unrefined ears (totally bombed that lossless vs 320kbps comparison test), not to mention the extra cost when I already have a Spotify and Amazon Music account.

You should give it a shot through Android Auto though, I didn't think the UI was that bad really. Also, have you tried downloading playlists in Spotify? I was curious how much difference it would make to be playing it locally off your device rather than actually streaming it. I think I've seen some settings for offline music quality, just never really messed with it.

I use prime video at home and added hbo, stars and showtime. I pay the once a year fee and like $20 for the other channels. A fraction of the cost of cable and to me just as good.

How is amazon music? Have you found they dont have some stuff?

I'm really curious as to how all these platforms get so many millions of songs on their data base.
I know I always upload to as many sources as possible but it doesnt seem likely that everyone does that.

Honestly, most of the time, I just use the Amazon Music playlists and/or "stations". I'll pick something like "70's Rock" and just let it play. No commercials and the sound quality is really good. I do have a ton of 320k .mp3's on a tiny little 128gb thumb drive that I leave installed as well - so I have plenty of "local" music to play too. My 47 year-old ears can't tell the difference between flac and 320k mp3, so I'm fine with that. Just use Amazon to get some different stuff every once in a while.

I can also use platlists on my local thumb drive music as well, which is nice - set up playlists for different "Genres" and let it play in shuffle mode...

Playlist are the reason I use youtube red so much. I've been using YouTube for so long I have extensive playlist and really hate to have to start over.

If using Tidal you'd want to use it with android auto or car play so it is using USB instead of BT for the audio to get the best quality possible.

Being that I'm running a stock head unit I just dont think a paid subscription would be worth it. I have android auto but my factory radio doesnt sound great. It's not horrible but it's not on par with aftemarket units either unfortunately.

Nothing whatsoever to do with Spotify via USB audio so no.

You don't like Android Auto but you haven't tried it?

In both my vehicles I installed an Alpine X208U and installed a USB port in the compartment in the center console purely for Android Auto. I do not want to see the phone or fiddle with it in the automobile environment, it sits there tucked away out of sight while being charged as I use the Head Unit to control everything. Plugging into usb and fiddle farting with the phone to get something started makes the phone nothing more than kluge.

My most used app is Alpha Player which is purely SomaFM which is not even advertised as an Android Auto app. When I started using Android Auto a year ago, there was a small handful of apps, now there are many and it grows by the week it seems. With Android Auto the trick is to not try too hard, eg don't try to scroll, that feature will stop you when you are moving, simply search by letter, tap the letter, pick from stations that start with that letter. Once being played, you can move stations in alphabetical order by simply using the forward or back arrows.

When when the Android Auto home page is showing, you get local weather as well as what's playing and recent phone calls etc. Too much clutter? Swipe what you don't want showing off to the right. Want to find a place to get teryaki? Hit the MIC icon in Android auto and tell it.

Neutron Audio player is the best for playing that huge collection of lossless FLAC files or artists and their albums off the smart phone, it too has the alphabetical search. GooglePlay will play local files but navigating is next to impossible. Where google play shines is if you play their online music, it will store 30 minutes worth to get you through dead spots. Mt Lassen California is the only sizable dead spot I have found yet. Di.fm and other Audio Addict stations I have not seen on the interface yet. Of course Pandora if you want it is built into some head units and that is good only for Bluetooth. And yes, Spotify is a supported app in Android Auto. You can vocally tell by talking to Google via mic to play a specific playlist in Spotify as an example.

I find recent updates to Android Auto making it the best it has been. Don't try too hard and fight it, let it do the work, you have a Mic to tell it what to do, you have alphabetical letter choice, you have forward and back buttons. Other than that, drive with the phone not to be seen or played with, stay in your lane and don't rear end anyone or run over pedestrians.

The only possible conflict I have personally is that while Google Maps is damned good, I like the Alpine Maps a bit better that is built in and provided by Navi who also supplies a few other brands native Navigation including OEM Car mfrs. I can toggle between google maps and built in by hitting the maps button. Most people are happy with just using Google Maps and can thus save several hundred dollars on a head unit that has every bit as good of audio quality. The new Halo units would be such devices.

It's obvious I am sold on this and hate Bluetooth due it's invasive nature, it WILL fight you and do exactly what you do not want when you did not ask for it, will connect itself somehow uninitiated even if you did not pair it yourself and even while the codecs get better, it's still another code decode cycle in the audio chain and is at the mercy of the quality of the Bluetooth codec being used. USB is a two for one, charging and USB audio at the same time and in most cases Android Auto will kick Bluetooth off. I do not look forward to Bluetooth Android Auto though. I hope you can disable it and have it stay disabled when it rears it's ugly head in the future. The Bluetooth philosophy seems to be, assimilate, resistance is futile.

I recently got a OnePlus 7 Pro and my old cheap shoestring usb cables did not work well with Android Auto on THAT phone. Went with thicker higher current better built cables with at least USB 2 capability and no problems. Seen three firmware updates now too related or unrelated.

Android Auto Apps List. Note that not all apps that support it are listed here, namely Alpha Player.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/c...:S:ANO1ljLhcXk

It should also be noted that while unrelated to to the topic of USB Audio, through app is available via USB for some head units with their native app on your smartphone.

Of course Pandora if you want it is built into some head units and that is good only for Bluetooth. And yes, Spotify is a supported app in Android Auto. You can vocally tell by talking to Google via mic to play a specific playlist in Spotify as an example.

I find recent Android Auto updates the best it has been.

I recently got a OnePlus 7 Pro and my old cheap shoestring usb cables did not work well with Android Auto. Went with thicker higher current better built cables with at least USB 2 capability and no problems. Seen three firmware updates now too related or unrelated.
I never said I havent tried it. I used it for a good while in my last truck. That truck inwas running a nice pioneer double din. This truck has android auto capabilities but it's a stock head unit.

I dont know where aindriod auto is in usability right now compared to 2 years ago but I run a business off my phone. I often have to send pictures, text and emails. Being able to do that a red lights is crucial to my standards if service. With my dealing with android auto I couldnt easily do those things in the 2 minutes a red light would afford me and found myself having to pull off the road quite often to disconnect from AA. Too often.
I prefer my phone to be active to direct input at all times.

Now If they have removed that "safety" feature that locks you out of your phone while connected I'd consider using it again.

^^^android auto will never be just Bluetooth. It'll be wifi. Right now our phones don't support wireless android auto. But it is out. Bluetooth handles phone calls on Android auto and thats it.
