how does it sound? 70 is quite low to ask a 5.25 driver to go down to but the ported box will surely help that

"you will need to use all 31 bands on the eq, qualifying a speaker as better cause you feel it needs lesser eq just means you're not listening closely enough."

I just modeled for now, and they look pretty amazing in such a really small enclosure... For sure they will be at my next project.

(I prefer NVX vs SB counterpart because they came with grilles)

Jamo 24394 6.5" $9 each (grabbed 4, 2 for backup). Check the plots & test review on zaph.....

Peerless TC9FD 3.5" $13 each, but got them on sale for $10 each

Dayton ND20FA-6 3/4" tweets back when they were $10 or so each.

All great performing drivers with a very usable bandwidth. Total $60 plus shipping, but actual $80 if you want to count the spare mids.
For a $9 driver this looks amazing. When you say you "accomplished this" was this in your car door?

Also, I've spent some months playing with this 8" for solely midbass and I'd have to say I've been impressed so far with its performance for the required passband. My xover points are for my own results with the acoustics of my truck and tastes, so you can't take my settings as the suggestion gospel. However, I've used them crossed around hpf 120hz @ -6db and up to around 500hz or so where they mate up with the SB midrange (600hz). Once tuned, the punchiness and overall midbass was very pleasing. Response below 100hz was very good to the point you could cross the sub low if needed. I'll soon be moving towards a pair of Beyma 8BR40/N for more xmax, but if you guys can model the Titan, you might can find use for it in a low budget build.

I have those 5.25" saved for a future project as well. And would definitely like to throw the NVX X-series / SB Acoustics into this list:

NVX XSPTW - $130
SB Acoustics SB12NRX25-04 - $110
NVX XSP65 - $160

Total - $400

Snag the pair of 12" when they have the buy one get one sale for $200 - $600 for the whole setup. Boom!

Oddly, it's the subs that did it. Bought them first, then the tweeters and 6.5" - added the 5.25" for possible rear fill later on. Easily some of the best speakers I've ever used.

You have to spend $100 to get free shipping at Parts Express. So if you stopped at $94 you would actually end up spending more to get them shipped.

I think it's more of a thought experiment. Is it possible to create a 3-way speaker system on a budget? The only issue I have is that nobody has posted much about crossover networks. You will either need to go fully active (with all the crossovers and processors that go along with that) or you will need to buy capacitors and inductors to make your own crossovers. I have been building my own home theater speakers using kits and parts from Parts Express. I have more money in the crossover networks than I have in the drivers.

I've been watching this thread closely because I have pre-existing stock locations in the door and on the dash. I imagine that the soundstage could be awesome if I were to go with a three way incorporating a 6 by 9 in the doors 3 in the dash and a three-quarter inch weeter mounted in the a-pillar or on the dash.

Being strict in driver cost should not mean that you're skimping in any other area including install & processing. In all honesty, I'd rather lower the cost of the drivers to make sure I can include a dsp & proper treatments because treating the environment is just that important to me. However, if you're brand-struck, then there's probably nothing that will convince you otherwise. Not to be facetious, but I've experimented enough with inexpensive drivers to know what can be had particularly in a 3-way since no one driver has to be perfect beyond its needed passband.

Its always better to make a 2 or 3 way set up with raw drivers and spend the saved money that you didn't spend on brand name mark up packages (or the passive network included), on processing like a minidsp.

This has been my problem, trying to build a truly amazing system without knowledge of the raw driver market. Im going fully processed 3way active, please, everyone see my post https://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/...sytem-yet.html

And im having alot of trouble commiting to a branded set that includes xovers. Sure i could sell them. But then I'm still paying 4 a branded symbol

Using raw drivers is about suitable specs & testing. Nothing more really. You have to know what you need the driver to do then find the driver that will do it. Graphs & test sites help a lot with this as some reputable ones provide true T/S parameters, axis, and distortion plots. If you're lucky, Klippel results are given.

The biggest complaints most will have are dealing with drivers mounted in doors and the low end response.... midbass. Modeling helps with that for me and I suggest getting into that as well. Basically, it takes a bit of research, reading reviews (with a grain of salt), along with some basic rules mixed with your own creativity.

Yup. That's my favorite thing about this site, people finding and sharing the hidden gems in the raw driver world that perform equal or better than some high-dollar brand-name gear. Take the Peerless TC9 https://www.parts-express.com/peerle...ofer--264-1062
It costs practically nothing and doesn't look like much, but it has it where it counts. Low distortion with a nice warm, smooth yet detailed character. It's by far my favorite midrange that I've used in a car, I like it better than the JL Audio ZR and Focal Polykev I ran way back when.

'18 VW Golf Sportwagen 4motion 6MT, a clean slate.

Ugh, having a hard time deciding on the midrange part. Part of me wants a 3" cone midrange and part of me wants a ~2" dome. I feel like the 3" has the response advantage while the 2" would have the install/look advantage off axis. Not sure. Suggestion on anything 4OHM thats shallow enough for an A-Pillar install?

A 3" in the pillar is on the large side to me. Some get away with it, but it depends on how much room you have up there. If you're using a mid no bigger than 6.5", I'd consider a 2-2.75" cone which may give you the room to orient them more on-axis without being so bulbous.

As far as domes, I'd be concerned with increased reflections being in a pillar with their wider dispersion.
