Default 3 way. 100$ 200$ 300$

So im curious what you guys can come up with for different gear selection for different budgets. Id like to see if any drivers are common.

This isnt a build for me or for anyone else. This is just for fun.

So rules. 3 way front stage.
Under 2in(mounted) tweeter
Between 2-4in midrange.
6-8 midbass. (Most stock cars)

Budgets are for drivers only.
Budgets are
$100
$300
$500
$700.

Those, to me are the most common and averaged prices you see for most people asking for advice on drivers on Diyma.

Go!

I've been looking a lot at the focal flax 3 way. Buying them raw will fall around $700.

Default 3 way. 100$ 200$ 300$

I've got a set of vintage MB Quarts 3-way set still new in the box (reference series) with their optional Musicomp 3-way crossover that I could sell if anyone is interested.

Mean midbass. Smooth but not super detailed tweets and mids I havnt heard. Tis a start.

The Jl's are supposed to be really powerful. I kinda feel like they cant be used without a shiton of deadening. Ive seen outer door panel flex from them. Thats gotta wreck havoc on FR

Its easy to do expensive buy can you pull one together for under $100. Try it..

It's a detailed driver set. You will not compete for midbass SPL with it, but you will notice each string of the bass being plucked. Also the entire 3-way is 60 watts/driver.

Now, the ZR800's are monsters, but I've deadened my car quite well. The only driver I'd even consider changing them for would be the Scan 18WU's, and I'd still likely use the ZR's. I've got an IDMAX 15 coming on Tuesday and I can't wait to see how well they blend together.

If you haven't listened to the 10f's, you really should. They're fantastic. Previous mids I've tried: HAT L3SE, Illusion C3 & C3CX, Morel CDM-880, and the AP NZ3's.

I have heard the neo xt25 suffer at higher volumes.

Ill be putting in a tm65, hertz hl70, the xt25 soon. Should be a solid combo

I am 2/3 of the way towards a $100-$200 set...

Dayton ND16FA-6 tweeters - $10 each
Dayton RS75-4 mids - $22 each

I would like to try with the Dayton RS180 but they won't fit, that would put the total at about $160. Maybe Silver Flutes that put's the total at I believe just over $120 for a 3 way.

Below a certain price point, choosing a 3 way setup instead of a 2 way setup starts to be more trouble than it's worth. You have to make such a compromise with driver quality to be able to buy 6 instead of 4 that I think that you'll end up worse off. That said, here's my $100 attempt:

Midbass: Dayton DC160-4, $24.63/ea
Midrange: Fountek FE85, $12.80/ea
Tweeter: Dayton ND16FA-6, $9.64/ea

This total comes in at $94.14 from Parts Express. If you have the room for a shieled 3" driver, you can substitute the Fountek for a Hivi B3N, which leaves you just enough money for a Dayton DA-175 7" woofer instead of the DC160. The DA-175 is an 8 ohm driver, but has great low end and good excursion. I actually use one as a subwoofer in my dining room.

I would probably sneak ever so slightly over the $100 limit ($102.04 to be exact) and use the Dayton DA-175, Fountek FE85 and Dayton ND16FA.

this is my sig.

I recently built a bookshelf 3-way with purpose-made passive crossovers using the following found at Parts-Express. I can give you the crossover schematic if you're interested. I'm really astonished at how good they sound for the money I spent building them:

Dayton Audio ND25FA-4 1" Soft Dome Neodymium Tweeter ($15)
Dayton Audio RS52AN-8 2" Dome Midrange ($41)
Dayton Audio DCS165-4 6-1/2" Classic Subwoofer 4 Ohm ($43)

Crossover frequencies I used are: 500hz and 3.0khz

Good luck with your project!

Hi-Vi LK6.5 6.5" Woven Kevlar Cone Woofer $36.50 Each

Eton Symphony 3" Midrange 3-400/A8/25 MG $169.00 Pair

Tymphany XT25SC90-04 1" Dual Ring Radiator Tweeter $18.00 Each

$278, mid-woofs and mids from the Madisound Specials page. Tweeters from Parts-Express.

I put most of the money in the midrange as that's my sweet spot and IMO the Eton mids are an excellent deal at that price...I've heard the mids and the tweeters (separately), both very nice. The mid-woof looks to be a sweet deal at $36.50. For under $300 this could be an excellent system with careful DSP work.

Accomplished this a few years back and still keep the drivers shelved because they're that good.

Jamo 24394 6.5" $9 each (grabbed 4, 2 for backup). Check the plots & test review on zaph.....

Peerless TC9FD 3.5" $13 each, but got them on sale for $10 each

Dayton ND20FA-6 3/4" tweets back when they were $10 or so each.

All great performing drivers with a very usable bandwidth. Total $60 plus shipping, but actual $80 if you want to count the spare mids.

Default Re: 3 way. 100$ 200$ 300$

I recently pulled out the boisterous TM65 for a bit of more refined upper bass/lower midrange of the $9 Jamo. They also have a better bottom end without forcing with the EQ. Right now they're paired with a set of Wavecor 2.75" that were on sale at 50% off ($39 each) for an augmented wideband approach. Counts as 2-way for now and sets my front driver cost at slightly less than $100. This setup is only temporary while I try to maximize the response before seeing where I need to bring in the ND20FA-6 in the sails. Those are still from the earlier purchase of around $10 each. So far so good and that will bring my 3-way tally up to around $120 ($150 shipped if you want to be realistic about full expense). I think that will be hard to beat by my own standards considering what I'm getting out of them so far. Would be even cheaper if I could get the TC9 to fit.

Your price range is 700% wide. That's like asking for a car recommendation somewhere between $10k and $70k. That doesn't make any sense.
What is your goal exactly? What are you trying to learn?

Measure with mics, mark with chalk, cut with torch, grind to fit, sand to finish, paint to match.

Oh crap I just tallied mine up and what I'm planning for midbass. About $550ish. I better do a good job on the install. Haha

Scan D3004
Scan 10F 4ohm
NVX XSP65 (SB17) soon to be TM65

Two SBP12's to round it all off. Not included in above figure.
