Default Anyone tried ScanSpeak Illuminator Beryllium Dome Tweeters? Impressions please

As the next step of my project I’d like to buy a new set of tweeters to replace my GS10’s. The Frogs have been great but I’m just looking for something new.

I know GreatLaBrowski has ScanSpeak Illuminator D3004/6040-10 Beryllium Dome Tweeters and chose to stick with them after trying out a bunch of other tweeters.

For whatever reason these tweeters have really intrigued me and I’m strongly considering purchasing a set for myself.

I’m wondering if anyone else has tried them out, and if so what their impressions (either positive or negative) were.

Thanks in advance for opinions on these tweeters.

Thanks in advance for opinions on these tweeters.

I'm running a pair in my Truck A-Pillars on-axis. I really like these tweets. It takes awhile to brake them in, but after that, they were really easy to tune to a Speaker Curve and are smooth and detailed. I found that the lowest I could cross them at was 2800(HP/LR24), anything lower and they would sound funky when turning up the volume. My Mosconi Amp are running them and my midranges, puts out 105 Watts per channel.

I've had the GB10's in the A-Pillar, and I like them, but the lowest I could get them to play decent at loud volume was crossed 3200(HP/24LR)

I'm really looking for a tweet that can play at loud volume crossed at 2000(HP/24LR), and when I find one, I'm gonna buy it... till then I'm happy with the Scans d3004-6040-00

Mine replaced GB15's and I love them. They're in the dash corners, crossed at 2200 Hz 24dB LR. I have the D3004/6040-00.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the GB15's, and I consider it a lateral change. There's just something about them that I prefer. They're just as smooth as the GB's, but a hair more detailed.

James, are you running the Scans d3004-6040-00, or the Scans Scans d3004-6040-10. I think the -10 will play lower than the -00 due to the cone on the backside.....

Nice to see that both of you preferred these to your frogs, even if they were only marginally better.

I think I’m going to try the deeper (-10 ) version out for myself soon. If I like them I think I’ll glass them into my door triangles and get rid of my gs10 were are in the German aluminum pods.

I have them and absolutely love them. I run them on axis in the a-pillar and paired with the 18wuís in the door. I canít remember exactly but there crossed fairly low, I think around 2200hz. They are definitely my favorite small format tweeter but I havenít heard the frogs.

I've been eyeing the Scan beryllium for some time too...

My Sinfoni Tempo 10's have been excellent, and I really have no complaints with them.
But I've got the fever... you know, the fever that always costs more money.

I was recently put onto these new BlieSMa beryllium tweeters:

https://hificompass.com/en/speakers/...bliesma-t25b-6

https://hificompass.com/en/news/all-...w-tweeter-line

They're not out for a few more months, but on paper they look incredible! (for a small format tweeter)

The GB15 can play loud with a 2000 Hz LR4 crossover as this is where I have mine set.

Curious why you had trouble getting your GB10 to play below 3200? I have mine at 2500 Hz LR4 and have no issues at all.

I agree that the gb10’s should play lower.

I have my Beryllium scans D3004/6040-00 in hand. Currently using the soft dome versions D3004/6020-00.

Should be have them swapped within the next 2 weeks. Itís not the D3004/6040-10 but Iíll do my best to post my opinions on their differences.

It's a big difference IMO. I've had all 4 (both variants of the silk domes and both variants of the beryllium dome D3004's).

Take a look at the sexyness of this THD graph for the D3004/6040-00's (2.83v):

And still nice at (8v):

You gotta hand it to Scanspeak's SD2 motor, they really resist higher-order harmonics. The 2nd order harmonics are harmless and contribute to the warmth of the tweets.

But looking at the Bliesma T25B-6's, you can see why they're interesting:

(2.83v):

(8v):

Excellent suppression of 3rd, 4th, and 5th order harmonics. 2nd order harmonics remain below 1% between 3-8khz, even at an 8v signal (loud). 2nd order harmonics above 8khz should be above audible frequencies.

The D3004/6040's are excellent small format tweeters. We'll have to see how the Bliesma's sound in person when they're released in a few months, but I'll compare them to my D3004/6040's.

Not to nitpick, but the illusion audio copper-beryllium tweeters are not actually beryllium. Their domes are about 1-3% beryllium by weight.

Default Re: Anyone tried ScanSpeak Illuminator Beryllium Dome Tweeters? Impressions please

My buddy David @ Twelve Volt Technologies swapped some drivers in my 3-way frontstage the other day while I was work

I chose to upgrade from Stereo Integrity TM65MKII to TM65MKIII and ScanSpeak D3004/6020-00 soft dome to D3004/6040-00 beryllium dome.

Here are some 1/24th measurements.

Soft Dome: 2khz-20khz | Beryllium Dome: 2.5khz-20khz

RIGHT:

LEFT:

They measure pretty similar. But they sound oh so different.

Before I purcchased the beryllium dome versions, I scoured the internet for reviews. Only a couple out there. I had the burning curiosity about what exactly are the differences in sound between the soft dome and beryllium version of the ScanSpeak tweeters. I have been struggling to find any reviews where someone directly compares the two verisions.

I enjoyed the silk dome version for a while until I decided to ugrade when I saw an offer posted on here for a price I couldn't miss out on.

I asked the selling user (who happen to have a lot of experience with the different beryllium ScanSpeak tweeters) to give me his impression on them.

I couldn't agree more with the description provided to me. It is spot on:

Quote:
These are better than the silk dome version because of their tonality and musicality. I know that sounds strange, but AudioXpress.com's editor Vance Dickason noted that the D3004 beryllium family has "one of the most musical tweeter timbres that I have encountered". He typically does not make subjective comments so that kind of shows he REALLY likes these.
https://www.audioxpress.com/article/...e-d3004-604000

These (beryllium domes) sound warmer/more full-bodied than the silk dome D3004's, but not in a way where they're adding any coloration at all. I'd describe these as extremely natural sounding and perfectly neutral.

I don't believe proper beryllium tweeters impart any coloration at all. They have this "holographic" quality to them, where the sound is extremely focused, and detailed. I have spent about 16 hours listening to the large chamber brothers of these and I can't see anyone calling them harsh. They do not sound like aluminum or magnesium dome tweeters at all. The SD-2 motor system in these tweeters are pretty advanced designs, and result in really good performance.

Higher-frequency notes such as chimes and cymbals sound holographic, as in you're hearing music, not the tweeter. When you compare the silk dome tweeters to the beryllium dome tweeters back-to-back you'll notice that the silk domes sound "airy", with a bit of "hiss".

Without anything to compare that to, you'll interpret that hiss/air as detail, but it's actually artifacts occurring with the silk dome. When you hear the beryllium dome tweeters you'll notice they sound "higher resolution" and "full". More detailed yet warmer and no hiss or air. Vocals through these sound more natural, as do guitar plucking and other sounds like that. I actually haven't found anything that I don't prefer out of these over the silk dome ones. They're simply better.

Experiment crossing them between 2.8khz - 3.8khz LR4.
I never realized how much the soft dome versions where adding their signature to the sound. The airy detailed sound I thought I was hearing is now replaced in the beryllium versions with clarity, focus, and transparency.

Pureness. Like vision coming into focus.

Iím glad youíre happy with them. I was hoping not to oversell them but I was just being honest with my impressions.

They are exactly as you mentioned! Very awesome tweeter. I'm not sure I can go back to the silk dome versions anymore.

I was recently put onto these new BlieSMa beryllium tweeters:

They're not out for a few more months, but on paper they look incredible! (for a small format tweeter)
Those don't look better on paper than the scans? Maybe I'm missing something?

It's nice to see a lot of folks preferring beryllium tweeters over their silk dome counterparts.

Here's why beryllium is great for making tweeters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FXTLFOJlxg

Great damping and very low resonance compared to other alloys. It's a rare metal which is why you would pay $700-1800 for a set of tweeters of pure beryllium. The illusion tweeters are barely made of beryllium. They added it for marketing purposes....

Yes they do. Higher sensitivity, lower LE, lower MMS, higher xmax, and tests show greater reduction of high order harmonic distortion and reduced 2nd order distortion at higher volume levels.

Anyways I guess I’ll know in a month or two.
