Default Silver Flute vs DynAudio mw160gt

Not that they are of the same quality, but I was surprised to see a $20 midbass driver look as tough and sturdy as this. I can wait to get it in and tweak it.

the build quality doesn't seem to match up to the Dyn, but what are you expecting of the sound quality ? i'd be very impressed if the silver flute is as good as or better as the mw160gt

You are aware that the woofer with the beefy cast basket is the Silver Flute and not the Dyn, right? (I'm shocked that Dynaudio is still using the crappy, excursion-limiting basket from their ur-17W75 in their car-fi line; I assumed they were at least using the cast spoke basket they used on their Esotec-class drivers.) IMO, the main knock against the Silver Flute drivers is that they’re priced awfully close to the Dayton RS stuff...

There’s no reason to ipso facto assume that the Dynaudio is a superior driver to the Silver Flute. One would expect some driver development in two or three decades, which is the approximate age of the Dynaudio design. Also, people who measure stuff (as opposed to people enchanted by brand-names with high pricetags) have long noted that Dynaudio's QC isn't exactly world beating. Dynaudio is perhaps the most overrated drive-unit brand in the world.

yeah I want to hear some dyns just to say I heard them, but I cant quite understand how and why they are so costly, when they are so old technology, and the throw on the midbass drivers is soo low?

so you replaced the dyn with the silver flutes? or are those for wifeys car?

Well I dont think the Silver Flute is going to be the one to really compete with the Dyn, but for sure brands like Seas, Dayton, Vifa, and Peerless will. From what I have heard off hand is the Silver Flutes are dissappointing somewhat, especially from a driver as well built as that. In person, this driver looks like a damn tank.

midrange is where they excel....midbass is a little thin...
