Default Install a center or rear speakers ?

Dear diyers ..

I have been tweaking my car audio system for a while,
the current state is:
- HU
- DSP 8 channels
- Power-Amp 2 x 4 channels
- 3 way front speakers (AP RAM 6.1 plus AP NZ3 Albe)
- 1 active subwoofer

As you can see, 1 channel of DSP and 2 channels of Power amp
are still unoccupied.
Then I have a pair of AP NZ3 Albe (full-range) waiting to be installed.

So my dilemma is, should I install them as:
A. Rear speakers (pair, left and right), for surround sound
or
B. Center speaker (only 1), trying to achieve dual listening position

Which one would have more impact ?
Thanks for your opinion.

Neither. Dial in your tune if you feel like something is lacking. Throwing more speakers at a problem is almost never a good solution.

If your DSP can do differential rear fill, then that would be better than using a center channel, but I don't particularly like rear fill, even when done well (differential).

The DSP can do differential,
but don't have a special center channel (like Helix Mini DSP for example).

Meanwhile, the main lacking is,
my wife on the passenger seat cannot experience the music
as amazing as me from the driver side.

I applaud your efforts, but it can only sound perfect in one spot at a time.

The center channel may even it out a bit but it won't perform miracles.

You may consider tuning for the spot between your seats and save it for use when you are both in the car. It won't be perfect for either of you, but much better for her.

what dsp is it? you can always use all pass filters if the dsp has them to do a 2 seat tune. Or if you want to do an even better job, upgrade to a Helix DSP.3 and use their upmixer/all pass filters to create an even better 2 seat tune

My DSP is just the Dayton Audio DSP-408 (very basic).

Helix DSP.3, or maybe Match UP 7DSP, would solve the problem,
but I can't afford it in the near future.

Default Re: Install a center or rear speakers ?

I would not do any of that from your 1st post, but if anything I would rather go with corectly processed rear fill.... A lot of delay, band limited, low volume....

with rears installed passengers on rear seats will have at least something to listen to rather your subwoofer alone

Thanks for the opinions. I'll go with rear fill then.
