  1. Which of these three subs?

System Design: Help Me Choose Equipment For My Car
And, I’m not saying the JL isn’t the better sub, but I am saying that you would be surprised by how similar decent subs of similar displacement sound, assuming each is in a box optimized for each sub. Excursion is good, but how does that define performance? The more a sub moves, the more...
  2. Rear fill questions

    General Car Audio Discussion
I will try to read through that thread later, in the meantime I’ll point out that rear speakers are harmful to proper stereo reproduction, so the argument should be, “if I insist on using them anyway, what configuration is the least harmful?” Maybe it’s not helpful for me to say, but you have...
  3. Dayton Audio Speakers

    General Car Audio Discussion
I always wonder what people mean when they want their front stage to "keep up". If you push those 3 15's to their limits, your front stage would be so loud that you couldn't possibly stand it. This concept of people thinking they need to keep up with their subs is terribly flawed.
  4. Rear fill questions

    General Car Audio Discussion
Let's see if we can get some where. Firstly, I am very vocal about my opinion against rear fill. I think even "proper" differential rear fill is artificial, and an unnecessary burden if accurate stereo reproduction is the goal. Your plan is far from "proper" rear fill, but maybe we can come...
  5. Which of these three subs?

System Design: Help Me Choose Equipment For My Car
As the driver gets smaller, and the frequency it plays gets higher, we are more sensitive to distortion. At subwoofer frequencies we are very tolerant of distortion, but not at high frequencies. There is a huge differnece between a flea market tweeter or midrange, and a high end tweeter or...
  6. 80PRS alternatives?

    General Car Audio Discussion
I would recommend running the 80PRS without a DSP. It's a pretty powerful head unit, and can make a pretty impressive system. If you decide to run a DSP, then pick whatever single din will fit the rest of your needs. A standalone DSP is certainly more powerful than the processing in the...
  7. Which of these three subs?

System Design: Help Me Choose Equipment For My Car
Sub bass is really easy because we don't hear distortion well at low frequencies at all. Moving up to a more expensive sub might lower distoriton a bit, but it will have very similar output to similarly sized subs. If one sub has significantly more excursion than the others, if can move more...
  8. 80PRS alternatives?

    General Car Audio Discussion
If you add a DSP, I don't see any reason to use the 80PRS, just about all of it's perks will go unused. You could spend that money on a double din with a decent screen, and Apple Carplay, or some other features that are appealing to you.
  9. Which of these three subs?

System Design: Help Me Choose Equipment For My Car
Ported can give 3dB more output by taking advantage of the rear wave. Changing the size of the enclosure could help, manufacture's recommended sizes aren't typically the optimal size, so you may be able to get more output from what you already have by building a new box.
  10. 80PRS alternatives?

    General Car Audio Discussion
There really aren’t any modern competitors to the 80PRS, if you want active 3 way with just a head unit, then you have the 80PRS, and a few double dins. However, none of the double dins offer L/R EQ, the 80PRS is as good as you’ll get unless you step up to the P99RS, or a standalone DSP
  11. 18 Channels for SQ? In a tacoma?! Though how do I pull it off? Need suggestions for DSP, two six channels, two active three ways as well.

Technical & Advanced Car Audio Discussion
The problem is, for every extra speaker you add to break up the bandwidth you have 2 more crossovers to get right, level matching, and phase. If you cannot time align them correctly, level match correctly and optimize the crossovers, then you're at a disadvantage. There isn't really a benefit...
  12. 18 Channels for SQ? In a tacoma?! Though how do I pull it off? Need suggestions for DSP, two six channels, two active three ways as well.

Technical & Advanced Car Audio Discussion
Then maybe remove the "SQ" from the thread title. Your plan is actually to go in the opposite direction of what would commonly be agreed to as being a sound quality system. Despite many people's belief, the fewer speakers you can use, the better. There is absolutely no benefit to running...

  15. Front stage imaging on 2016 Transit connect

Technical & Advanced Car Audio Discussion
If staging and imaging are big concerns a DSP is really the only way to get it right in a car. Having EQ for each speaker, or a least per side is the only way you'll get a stable center stage that doesn't wander depending on the frequency.
  16. Ohms and Independence

    General Car Audio Discussion
They are dual 2 ohms, right? Wire the voice coils on each sub in series, making each sub 4 ohms, then wired them together in parallel.
  17. What is the best box configuration for a hatchback?

    General Car Audio Discussion
I use WinISD. Once you enter the TS parameters, and select your enclosure volume, you can adjust the tuning frequency and port diameter to see what length is needed.
  18. Dayton Audio Speakers

    General Car Audio Discussion
Gotcha, if they aren't in the doors, I'd go with the paper version. Even in the doors, it depends on where you live, I'm in Denver, it's bone dry here, and you could probably get away having the paper midbass in the doors. I put some in a buddies car, but never got to see how they held up over...
  19. my saga with p99 continues please help or assist. or advice...

    General Car Audio Discussion
I think you summed it up will with the first sentance in your last paragraph. Technology and manufacturing have advanced to a point where even cheap, no-name brands can put out decent stuff (compared to 20 years ago). The difference between a quality middle of the road amp, and a high end...
  20. What is the best box configuration for a hatchback?

    General Car Audio Discussion
You do not need to have a box professionally designed, if you have some wood working tools. The hardest part about designing a box is not getting the volume or port correct, it's getting it to fit in the car the way you want. This part will be much easier for someone who has access to the car...
