Just like with any other do-it-yourself project, you should have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish. unlike a lot of do-it-yourself projects, car audio is not one of those that you want to go in blind.

⁽ⁱᵐᵃᵍᵉ ᴷⁱⁿᵈˡʸ ˢᵗᵒˡᵉⁿ ᶠʳᵒᵐ ᵀʰᵉ ᴳᴱᶜᴷᴼ⁾

unlike other projects, car audio needs a certain set of tools and at the very minimum a screwdriver a multimeter and maybe some really good ears. the last part is an absolute.

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ or enjoy whats left of your Ride in other ways ♥

for those that don't know, do-it-yourself Mobile Audio is more or less geared or focused towards sound quality and musical reproduction. We care about the sound and Sound Quality. We don't care how we get there. But we do care about doing it right the 3rd, 4th or 10th time.

SMD designs,, DIYaudio-(Linux for AudioWorld) and about 10 others serve a particular purpose or Market segment that they tend to cater to. there are a lot of avenues of car audio, however we focus specifically on the FUN of music here. And it's reproduction in the most faithful most accurate or Moses healing way possible to the ear. Some take it to extremes, and that's fine. But just like High school, you don't want to do what everyone else is doing. remember what happened to Lighting McQueen after he O.D'ed on Rustee's?

if sound quality is your goal, here is at the right place. But don't let the high prices of gear fool you. You can get a wonderful sounding system for as little as a couple of hundred dollars. Or free in many cases. Its possible. Just as your Local ThinBlueLine Brigade how they do it. Be Creative!

before you grab your screwdriver and your Visa card, or Hammer and Chicle; let's talk about specifically why you want to upgrade your car audio in your car. And some of the things you should plan for well ahead before starting. Plan-----------

Many people new to the hobby just think its easy to just buy your way into new gear, Slap it in, and call it a day. Nothing could be further from the truth.
You see, you got used; to just handing over money, and getting something. True, this is a good plan. But often times, people think that it should be easy. It is. For some.

But as a person who is just starting out, or you happen to look like FatFruckFred, you got a LONG way to go. And here is NOT the place you should start. Why? Your going to be over your head.

People will often tell you that you need to Buy this or that brand, and you have to just deal with it.

No.. No you do not.

A long time ago, they made these things called Books. Bellow was a book given to me as a guide on how to teach people about Glory of Car audio. I'm Blind to many things; but I still find it useful under my Drill press. Its one of My favorite Books to use when Helping myself understand the TRUE meaning to Car audio.

Ahem.. First Edition.

So lets begin with what you REALLY need to do first before you are ready to ask for advice from anyone here that knows a thing or two about Underwater Basket Weaving, Medical Malpractice, and Acoustics being a hobby of ours.
Some of us have lives. And some of us are simply tired the Publik Edmycaution is so bad, people often forget the VERY FIRST RULE about CAR AUDIO.

⁽ᴺᵒ ᵒⁿᵉ ᵃᵍʳᵉᵉˢ ʷʰᵃᵗ ᵗʰᵉ ʳᵘˡᵉ ⁱˢ ʸᵉᵗ, ᵇᵘᵗ ʷᵉ ᵃʳᵉ ᵃˡˡ ʷᵒʳᵏⁱⁿᵍ ᵒⁿ ⁱᵗ. ᶜᵒᵐᵖˡᵉᵗⁱᵒⁿ ᵈᵃᵗᵉ ˢᵒᵐᵉᵗⁱᵐᵉ ⁱⁿ .... ²⁰⁴⁷⁾

Rule of thumb?

Its all about the PLANING Anon.

Its a good thing to know your car. Not all cars are the same. And if you think they are? More Fire to you and OBD codes are your Spirit animal.

Places like CrutchField are a GOOD START.

  • Alibaba is NOT.
  • EBAY is NOT.
  • BANG-ME-GOOD&Hard Same...
You need to understand that you can't just pick anything and make it work well. So learn about your car. Just like when you had to learn about how Girls don't really enjoy Bumpy roads and Rain all that much. Playtex and Revlon makes a Killing a however. And its the same in Car audio. There are Lots of Bumps ahead just starting out till you get up to speed.

The First thing is people will tell you that you need a better Head Unit. Most Married men agree on this as well, so lets start there. The Issue is, is it worth keeping the one you have? Most of the time, we are stuck with what we have. Some times, you have to work around the limitations of what you got now. And swapping it out can be a COSTLY experience if you don't know what you are doing.

Here is Forum Member Robert Hartley who is the Editor of the The Absolute Sound. His first install did not go as planned. Don't think for a minute that Home audio is just like car Audio. You can't just buy your way to greatness.

Its Important to have FULL plan to what you want to do. And before you do anything, we need to talk about Power. It not just for white people anymore. You need a well grounded & Balanced approach. As in anything, a good foundation will allow you to build the system of your dreams and leave plenty of feasibility for upgrades in the near future.

Don't skimp on Power cables.
  • Run your wires properly.
  • Grommet's are not just smart, there essential.
  • Just like last Friday night, use a sheath on your wires.
  • Big Beefy Copper wires will give your equipment all juice it can handle.
  • Terminal Wires And Tight Secure Connections Utilizing New Terminals Should be a given.

Your Electrical system should be in TOP SHAPE.

  • Battery & Alternator Tested and in good working order.
  • A worn out belt can affect power delivery.
  • Solid Battery terminals tight with ZERO corrosion.
  • Slipping or worn out belt can affect power delivery.

This is where EVERYONE makes their FIRST MISTAKE.

After you got your power all sorted out, and you have an Idea of where you want to put things or where you have room for them, people start looking a gear. Hold on their Fren, you got some work to do!

Sketch out and make a system plan. Sounds stupid till you do it. Every Building has a BLUEPRINT.
Do the same.

After that you need to learn about how to take off body panels, and how to remove plastic parts SAFELY.
Breaking these can be costly, but important. Why?

You may not know this yet, your speakers? They are sad. Very Sad.

You see Anon... Speakers need space sometimes. And like children, they need Boundaries. A positive structure can give them just what they need to shine. Your speakers need GOOD home. And what they got was a bare apartment with shaky thin walls. You can hear everything. And its just not very pleasant.

So lets start by making your Speakers happy Anon. Lets give them the home they deserve. A solid home with that will provide the little woofers with just what they need to perform their best. Ringing is best left to bells. Not your woofer and doors.

Start with reading up on Sound deadening and how you should go about it in your own car. Its best to have a PRO help out on the first try. Its not that hard, but it helps to have someone do the hard work for you. And believe it or not, you will be amazed at what those Sad speakers can do once you do this.

Remember what I talked about good foundations? This is the part you CAN NOT SKIMP ON.

Your Doors are like your home. You can put cheap things in it, but if the house is crap, whatever you put in it is not going to matter. Its going to be cheap, icky and not a place you want to be.

But if you have great home? Whatever you put in it is going to feel great!

Try it out for yourself, and DO NOT SKIMP HERE! THIS IS THE NUMBER ONE REASON why people buy speakers and feel they don't sound good. Go on to buy DSP's, and try to fix what they left broken.
Don't do that to yourself Anon. Don't do it to your POOR little stock speakers. Give them a Proper home, and see what they can do before you give up on them. You can Paint lips on a pig, but its still a pig. Or however that saying goes...

If you did that? Or had someone else do it for you? Listen to them now. See what I mean? They sound good better Hugh? See, Speakers like to work in their happy place. Put your speakers in a Happy place. And you will be happy. Pretty simple Hugh? It should sound night and day. And if it does not? Ask some guy who's a cat that will help you get there. The best part is? Once you do this? This upgrade is the last you have to do.
After this, whatever speakers you want to buy? You are going to get the MAXIMUM of what that driver can do.
And Get your moneys worth! You like Money don't you Mr. Crabs? Sure you DO! And nothing can give you more of a return on your investment then a Proper place to put your speakers.

You know the difference between a great sounding car and a bad one? Well now you do.

Speakers just like you need your space. To much or too little can be a problem. You want to set your drivers up just like does. But as you know, speakers just like people have different needs. So find the ones that work best for you BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING!

Once you got all the rattles and the cabin sounding like fort knox, you are ready to start the next step of your hole in your wallet. And lets begin with that. You got a solid basis now. And you can REALLY get your moneys worth out of your next upgrades.

Before you do, make a list of things you want to upgrade. What you are missing. And what you really want or need in your ride. Bluetooth? Bass? Hands free Phone, Mobile VIdeo? Or Hair tricks. I don't judge.

Its time to ask for what to buy..,

So you heard that This brand or that brand sucks. Or you think you know what sounds good. And you are ready to ask for some Advice.

Its like arguing over what Cheerleader would make a better wife. Or what Console platform is better.
Or if Taco Bell is real meat. Schools out on that one. But one thing is for sure. High end audio, or what most people try to sell you can be a Trap. Maybe your into that kind of thing. But most people leave very unsatisfied. Don't be that way! You can get what you want and for the Price you can afford!

The Problem gets down to a sticky question. How do you know its good? Well. Here is the problem.

Just like Pizza, not everyone has the same taste in food. That really is up to you. And you need to find out what you want. And go for it.

What do I mean? Well. Remember back when you really wanted a Girlfriend? Kids? Family? Marriage? But then it wall went to hell?

See. Most people think they know what they want, and never stop to think what they really want. Its okay. We all make Mistakes. Lets find out what YOU want first. And how much you work YOU and I do mean YOU have to put in to get it.

Nothing in this life is Free* But Herpes is the gift that keeps on Giving. Funny note, Valtrex Does not have any Company swag. True story. I called for the Lulz.

But never mind that. Point is, if you want something, you have to work for it. And sometimes, if that does not work, just pay someone else to do it when you know what you want. If you don't? You will never be happy.

So lets start out with the goals your wrote down. And now, take a look at what fits, what YOU LIKE, and get a list of things you want to ask questions about buying. This is the first step. Start with the Headunit if you can. And see what you need to do there. If it works for you, there are plenty of options now that will let you keep what you got, and tune your system to meet your needs and wants.

Sure, there are LOTS of good options. But go with what you LIKE to use. Some people like Knobs. Some like to Push Buttons. Some just like a CLEAN layout. Its up to you.

Lets go with what Deck you want if you have that option. Got your list? PERFECT!
NOW is a great time to make your FIRST POST! List the Headunits you like, and ask for opinions. That's how this works!

Do that, and you are on your way to happiness. The deck is the heart and soul of your system. You are going to be with it for a long time. Get one that you know is going to go the distance. Something you would like to grow old with. And cherish for a LONG time.

If its your first time? Make sure to get it from a place you know you can count on that will help & brands that have good user feedback.

Not all gear sounds the same. But not all ears hear the same either. So make sure to take it for a spin.

I always say buying the head unit first if that is your route. Don't get snagged into buying something you don't want or need. Just like the sea, there are plenty of fish. Find the Perfect one for you.

I'm not going to give you guidelines. But lets be honest here. Just about any deck will do the job. Its just that some jobs are done better then others.

Cost wise? Even your run of the mill $60 deck can do a lot today.

IF IT HAS A RESET BUTTON? Well.. Its there for a reason.

Make sure it goes with your system plans. The sound quality on most decks to most ears sound the same on paper. But lets be honest here. Parts matter. Build quality matters. And its hard to go wrong with the major and Niche High end brands.

But start at the basics. You can always upgrade later if you want something like Digital out, Optical outputs.

Most good decks today come with some basic forms of DSP. Not the stuff on your phone. But they use a Microphone to tune the cabin and your system. THIS is a MUST. if you are not going down the standalone DSP route. And should be Mandatory if your want the best from your Audio Library.

If your just looking to blow some hair. Just go with a Mechless deck an call it a day. But if Audio Quality is what your after? And hearing the sweet song of a Enchantress voice in your ear? Then this is a good start.

Costs? Would you believe $50 bucks? Yup. Ask around. Its true.

Oh shit. Here we go.

Now, this is where you really have to pay attention. Lets get the first and easy thing out of the way.

To be FRANKLY HONEST? If you are chasing the Sound Quality Pony? And you want to do it on a Budget?
ANY REPUTABLE sub woofer on the market will do. Just like they say in the U.K.,,

Make one or Buy one. Get it out of the way. Just secure it so it does not become a projectile when you Hit the brakes in your car. End of story.

Often times, this is one thing that people do, and stop right there. That's fine. You do you.

SPL guys? Here is my AD-Vice.....

Ported, sealed, or Bandpass or I/B. Its up to you what you choose. But just like your doors, you have to give them a good home to work in. Do that? Even your cheap $20 subwoofer can do magic tricks.

Even your one stop shops pre built woofers can give you all that you need. If you don't like it? Do like in the WEST.

BUILD! And DO get HALP. Like it or not, a great box builder is going to not only make the woofer for you box, they are going to build it for your car. Remember. Your car is the ROOM. And the ROOM is your most important part of the puzzle. Any one can add bass. Its easy if that's all you really need.

Sub-woofer amps are not all the same. Again, this is a great question to ask on the forums. So do that.

And now... We get to the MUSICAL TRUTH..

Name a Brand. Any brand. And this is the response from some people.

(ㄒ卄乇ㄚ 千ㄖ尺Ꮆㄖㄒ "卂ㄩᗪ丨ㄖ卩卄丨ㄥ乇丂")

I'm going to be honest with you. There is no accounting for taste really. So that gets its own post.

The second one is:
  • what are the best speakers?

And this is where this thread goes to hell. The truth is? and this one's really going to hurt most people...
that would be a live performance. That's where you actually go outside and listen to musicians or your favorite band with friends have a beer and enjoy the day. But for some reason we want to create that experience and make a facsimile in our cars. Well? you are on a car audio website so..... that's probably what you're here for.

generally there are two basic kinds of people in the world and this image below illustrates them perfectly:

Why? Look here for what Google thinks.

Or HERE for what it says on Auto=Guide from Google.

What the Crutch says.

And what most people buy on Amazon.

Now here is something odd. what are these speakers over here on the right hand side of this page you ask? Have you ever heard of he's Brands over here to the right and the company called madisound or Parts Express or woofers etc for that matter?

Not time for that. You did say best right?

The big question on everyone's mind?

  1. How much do I have to spend?
  2. What am I missing out on?
  3. Are these speakers really sound that good?
  4. And of course? @$%@#%!! Why do they cost so much!
  5. Is it really the best?
Well. No. Best?
Here you go:

What about tweeters? These are great, and if your a smoker like me, they do great in cleaning the air.
Real Bargin at $16,000!

Best Mid-range you may ever hear? A real steel on the used market. $10,000

So want a woofer that can keep up with these? Sure FAM!
It can even cool your amps and you on those hot summer days.

And that's why that's a dump question......

and the same goes for speakers. Why you ask? Well from the beginning when the recording studio or dude on Fruit Loops decided to go ahead and make a record on his Macintosh iMac 400 DV computer, you're never really going to be able to hear exactly what was on the master recording.

You can only reproduce the signal --------but never the exact sound.--------- and people have been arguing Forever on what the perfect speaker is or what the perfect sound is or what the speaker or Hardware that you [should} use to reproduce it or brand, or make, or type should be or should not be.

Its like arguing about the color of paint. Is it pink or is it salmon? No one really knows, so we usually leave that up to professionals who then tell us exactly what that color is. Still doesn't matter I don't like pink but that's not the point...

the only way you're going to figure out about what kind of speakers you like or should is to get off your couch, and go out to some car audio shows or some showrooms or go actually hang out with real people with real car audio systems and listen to exactly what you like.

I'm telling you the car audio Fanboys ISSCA. Mesa . and all those other places could really use a few new bodies. It's getting kind of lonely if you know what I mean. as a side note, I always thought it's a little bit weird that people in jail may be really happy if they owned a set of magnepans or Martin Logan's or any kind of flat style speaker .just saying .

if you really have no friends, all you have to do is go pick up a set of headphones find your perfect set and then recreate that sound in your car. It's really that simple. Most of you even have home audio systems correct? Well try to duplicate that. Those are the speakers that you should probably use. As a handy little guy here are some Brands you should probably think about yes I'm going to go ahead and be a little bit judgmental only because I think these speakers are some of the best I've ever heard..

I'm only going to be listing Brands as Believe It or Not There are as many speaker models as there are people in the world. seems kind of weird to think about but with the Advent of cell phones just about every cell phone comes with at least two speakers. kind of really cool trivia huh?

Its true. use it wisely.

Sometimes, it's just a better idea to have someone else do the work for you. And that's okay but what if you don't have very much money and you want to have some really decent sound?

each of the below has some significant drawbacks. With the ones below being some of the most significant ones that will give you the most drawbacks simply because you don't know what you're buying. This is where you really need to pay attention to specifications but as we all know the last three well,,, the specifications can vary.

they have cheap and expensive and rather expensive Parts as well that you can order. And the best thing is a lot of times they have Closeouts or you can buy really high-end and high-quality drivers for almost nothing but a few bucks.

watch the sales and lookout for components that will work for you or you can modify to fit. You can do it he'll you can make a system that sounds almost every bit as good as something you would plunk down $1,000 for if you do your homework.

  • Parts Express
  • Madisound
  • Woofers etc
  • Sonic Electronic
  • Forums
  • Goodwill
  • ValTards
  • Garbage dump
  • Junkyard.
  • Ebay
  • Aliexpress
  • bangood

There is however, In my opinion one of the best car audio Bargains from a performance standpoint and perspective that is out there. And that would be the premium audio systems and some OEM Vehicles. Namely the Dyna audio systems that are involved bows and in Volkswagens and some Porsche Vehicles. They are absolutely stunning and about as good as most people are ever going to hear.

imagine getting $300 drivers for $8 or getting $500 parts for less than $4. with a little bit of tuning even cars that have relatively weak tweeters can work very well if you do your homework and understand that power can be an acceptable route to higher performance. But you must do your homework and realize that almost every speaker driver has its limitations.

if you want the de-facto go to car to go ahead and rip Parts out of and walk out of the junkyard like a happy little child on Christmas day? Try to look for a Volvo V70 or S70 that has the Dyna audio parts inside the car. It's one of the best high performance vehicles that ever came with a sound system worthy of anyone calling themselves in audiophile.

be sure to test the drivers before you leave with a ohm meter and understand that you are buying used parts so they are used speakers. Most the time the tweeters are in subpar condition so it's something that you're going to have to accept.

if there is one place that I recommend that you spend money that would be the tweeters Bar None, 100%, spend your money on good tweeters.

almost every other driver that is in your chain can be replaced with an inexpensive one and with a little bit of DSP and installer creativity you can make it sound very good.

remember there is always a solution if you're willing to work for it

Be amazing.
Go your own way.
And think outside the box.

I often have to wonder as a side note if people think that English is my second language.....
if only I could use that excuse
