Time to start the new build thread. I’ve been looking forward to this upgrade, and equipment is starting to trickle in. I’m not an installer, far from it. I can certainly do basic things, but the knowledge needed to pull off a quality build surpasses my skill set. I’m not the least bit ashamed to admit this…this is why we have great professionals like the many that post here on DIY regularly. That being said, I’m taking vacation and will be at the shop from open to close throughout the build, and helping as much as possible. I’m most interested in learning more about quality electrical layout and tuning. My local shop is excellent (average tenure of installer is about 20 years). I’ve known the owner for about 25 years and he’s a close friend. This will be at least the 8th full build he’s done for me. This will be the best “vacation” of my life. 😊

Vehicle: 2016 Ram Crew Cab 1500 4x4 Big Horn. There’s nothing fancy about the truck, but I love her. Exterior is basically stock. I added a leveling kit and slightly taller tires. Interior is stock, except the stereo. Windows are tinted dark. Along with this upgrade, I’m having the windshield tinted with see through UV tint and ceramic coated. I’m also adding a nice dash pad (would like suggestions on brands if you’ve used these before). The UV tint is primarily to protect my midranges and the dash pad is for SQ enhancement. The truck has 77,000 miles on her and I’ll never part with her. She’s all mine and a part of the family at this point. She’s my daily driver but may one day be retired to just competition use. I’ll let her be a “trailer queen”. Seriously though, I love my truck. 😂 Here’s a pic:

Current Build: I currently have Hertz ML 165.3 components in the front (tweets in dash and mids in door), ran passively, Hertz MP 6.5 coaxials in the rear doors, an Alpine Series R 12 under the rear seat (passenger side) in a Fox Box (ported). I’m using a RF T400X4ad running front and rear speakers and a RF T750X1bd on the sub. I used a JL Audio Fix 82 to integrate with the factory non-alpine uConnect 8.4 HU. Signal is sent optically to a JL TWK D8 for processing. The truck is sound deadened nicely throughout.

This has been an enjoyable system and my tuner knocked the tune out of the park. He was able to work magic, even with the SQ limitations. I’ve really enjoyed the Hertz components and the sub has performed well, again, given the limitations. I could not be happier with these small RF amps…never an issue, clean sound quality, and very impressive power from such a small footprint.

All of this will be going in my sons truck now. I used this fact to help talk myself into the upgrade.

I won a few of these competing MECA SQL competitions in the Street class with this very simple system. The magic is in the tuning! I made some new friends and had fun dipping my toe into the “competition scene”.

The Ram trucks respond so well to simple installs it’s almost cheating. My 2012 R/T killed it for a couple of years until I sold it and Theresa Bruno’s Ram just annihilates most things it competes against.
As for the dash cover I tried multiple brands and Dash Designs was by far the best for my current car. The Sedona Suede material looks pretty nice too.

Who you having do your tune? I saw you say your tuner preferred JLs software. Only guy I know of local is Drew Jones. One of the only active online guys from the br/denham area
Drew is getting pretty damn good with the Max.
I love MTI and all the guys there…I talk to Jim often. But…those mids in those stock dash locations and tweets in the sails is a deadly combo in that particular truck. Ask anyone that’s heard Theresa Bruno’s Ram. Those pods may be the easy way out but the other way sounds better.
I live in southeast Texas…we get our share of rain as well. I just keep a microfiber towel in the console and lay it on the sail panel if it’s raining hard. I knew going in I’d have to deal with it. I always said I’d never do kick panels either but here we are. lol
As far as windshield reflections with dash mounted mids…it’s just not an issue. Look at what Rick has been doing with his truck.

@UNBROKEN , what have we done?
I don’t think there’s anything better at that price point…and I’m not convinced even at a higher price point.

Dash Designs, Sedona Suede is what I ordered. @UNBROKEN said he tried a few and had the best luck with that manufacturer and model
I actually ordered another one from them in the Dashtex material. I wanna see what it looks like in person and possibly add some thickness to it.
Even the slightest chance of water intrusion and the fact I have a spare tire well sub enclosure is why any wood in my car is Baltic Birch and even that was sealed before install. Didn’t wanna take any chances whatsoever with MDF.

If MTI is driving distance you should be booking some tuning time with Jeff while you’re there.

MTI does pillars for trucks only right?
MTI does anything and everything you can imagine.

Made it to MTI. This is my first time visiting their shop. Holy crap…it’s Disney World for car audio and hot rod geeks. The guys are really awesome and I was able to demo one of their many award winning installs. This was a momentous occasion as it was the first time I’ve had the privilege of listening to a true, over the top, SQ install and tune.

The bar has been set, and that freaking bar is extremely high. The demo by itself was worth the 5 hour drive. I will be back down here in a month for a tune by MTI. If nothing else, I’ll have a good A/B comparison.

Side note: JL ZR800s are the real deal! Damn son! I will probably upgrade to the Utopia 8s before the end of summer. I just thought I knew what dynamic mid-bass sounded like. Ha, I couldn’t have been more wrong. An upfront sub in the passenger footwell may be in the works also. The 10WM would fit there nicely. It’s like freaking magic.

A-pillar pods are in-hand and I couldn’t be happier with the final product. Simply beautiful. Now on to Wichita Falls, TX for tomorrow’s acquisition. 😁
Listened to Jeff’s car, huh? lol

Just plan on a retune after 50-60 hours minimum. Over 100 would be even better. The Utopia stuff takes a minute to break in and smooth out. @RickWilson can back me up on that.

Question, will the fuse block we added to the rear wall suffice for EMMA's requirements? Each amp has its own fuse. The fuses are accessible by simply lowering the rear seat. They aren’t expecting to see an in-line fuse for something like the JL HUB are they? The HUB is fused, but it’s tucked away under the dash and not easily accessible.

As long as each wire leaving the block is fused properly you’ll be fine with that. Double check your fuses against the install rules though especially the main one at the battery. A pile of us got nailed at Finals last year.
If the hub has a power wire it should be fused. I would think a picture would be fine for that…it’s worked for me in the past. In fact I took the pics of hard to see stuff, printed them out and made a little book with them. Not a whole install book…just hard to see places, speaker wire terminations…stuff like that.
Just iron it. Mine had some wrinkles in it that wouldn’t lay out…10 minutes with an iron and it’s flat as can be.

Here’s a pic of my system diagram….pretty simple. 18x24 printed on a foam board at Office Depot. For the wiring diagram…IF anyone even asks for it they have a paper at the registration desk you can fill out. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you’re just bored. To this day I’ve never been asked for a wiring diagram.

You have your Tweeters and Mids running off the same channels?
No…but I’m the interest of simplicity I made the lines this way. I don’t even know why we need a system diagram…people looking at the car can literally see in person what’s in the car. lol

Glad it came out good and you didn’t dive into parts swapping right away. Sometimes a proper break in period and a solid tune are all you need.

Congrats, @saltyone.
Saw the TuN graphs posted and it looks amazing.
Bet it sounds awesome.
Remember to save me some seat time the next time we meet.

Jorge have you seen all the Texas shows that are coming up?
