I'm restoring a 1984 Toyota Pickup. The '90s era single-din receiver is coming out. A Sony XAV-AX1000 (dbl-din CarPlay) head unit is going in. I have a few questions (that will show my near absolute lack of knowledge in this space).

  • For the truck, I have a Metra 70-1398 receiver wiring harness. For the receiver, I have the Sony wiring harness. Can I assume that Sony and Metra are 100% in sync in their choice of wire colors - can I just match white to white, white/stripe to white/stripe, etc.?
  • The Sony receiver has a wire for the Parking Brake. Surely there's a standard hack here - to make the receiver think the brake is always on... right?
  • If I'm not using a backup camera, do I need to do something with the Reverse In wire, or will the receiver just ignore it unless it's connected?

Now, based those questions... are you thinking I should just take these three pieces to a shop and pay a pro to make the connections? Or is this not that complicated?
Thanks!

What are the odds - in a 37-year-old pickup, the factory harness is totally in tact! Almost all of the wires were directly aligned with the new harness. I'd call this one a 90% plug-and-play.

e39 touring, if the simple ground in the parking brake wire doesn't do it, I'll use one of those bypass modules - thanks!

Thanks for the help on this guys!

Ha! I am loving this old truck - it is PURE '80s. It spent its life on an Angus beef farm. It was well used. I'm giving it a second life... and it's taking me back to the '80s. Oh, and that clock is correct!

Some new metal, some new paint, some new wheels and tires, some new interior and a new new custom trayback.
