Add a lithium cell or a high output alternator?

6510 Views 56 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  ecobass
My car/audio electrical is this:
180amp alt and 2x large gel cell AGM’s and when running my lights dont flicker and it will droop too 0v-.4v by all the meters from my cars computer and a bass control that reads it.
I just installed two amps that are twice the power my old ones had. And yes everything possible is fused. So know my electrical system needs a boost.

Buy what i read i have several solutions.
A new alternator, Which is a pita as ill have to pay to get it done.
Add a JP40 lithium cell thats all self contained with a remote and im rather sure an isolator.

Buy a bigger lithium cell from Amazon as the are on sale.
with a dual lithium cell battery isolator.

lastly and its the easy way but mot the best imo is add another 12v agm Battery.

With all that info what do you suggest?

Honestly, after I upgrade the alternator and when I'm ready upgrade power. Mmats is coming out with a lsx8000.1. 🤷🏽‍♂️
Eventually, when ever I decide to upgrade the alternator. I'm sure that will blow them SQLs. Lol
Lol....I don't know...they've done some wild builds with those subs. That SALT will definitely test them though....probably dynos at 7k+

Maxwell and ioxus are the 2 most common ultracap brands skelcap is another though they are hard to find
I'm trying to assist one of the SPL guys in building a SkelCap bank for his competition Expedition and he's had 6 SCX5000's on order for over 8 months...

And again you find place anywhere to slide in SQL!

The Toshiba scib cells are very good cells though and are capable of insanely high discharge and charge rates

the 20ah RSV line is significantly different than the 10ah prw line spec wise

I personally will stick with diy options as at least that way I know exactly what I'm getting.
Yes used both RSV and the PWR, And it works perfectly for me. The DIY option would have been way cheaper but I don't have time for that. Plus I was scared of fvcking up. I also didn't want to play tetris in my trunk with cells.
My stock alternator finally gave up the ghost at 145k in my 2003 330i. So it's finally time to install a Mechman 270A alternator I've been hoarding for the last 10 years. I bought the thing thinking I might need it and never did. Now with LTO batteries widely available it seems like the perfect time to put it to use.

I'm about to build a drop-in 6s3p battery replacement from either the 10ah 75C or 20ah 35C prismatic LTO / Toshiba cells, so either a 30ah or 60ah battery depending on which cells I choose. This LTO battery will be the only battery in the car. I should be able to get the Mechman to charge at around 15V. 10ah cells have better 75C discharge rate but the 30ah battery might not have enough storage to start the car on a regular basis. I'm running power hungry Mosconi Pro 4/30 x 2 for front stage and Pro 1/10 x2 for SI IB24 2 ohm DVC.

Any advice on going with the 10ah cells or 20ah cells for a 30ah battery or a 60ah battery?

Thanks! Zac.

I have no experience building cells so I can't really say much about it. But if I ever did I'd be using Toshiba LTOs.

The lithiums I bought are XS power 5s (wich are toshiba cells). 10ah and a 20ah (PWR, RSV) along with an AGM. The combination works really well for me.

Thanks for the reply.

At this point I'll probably just roll the dice and go for performance with the 10ah cells and see how it goes.

Scib Lithium Battery - Bus Bars | Coventry Car Audio

I chose the 30ah buss bars version on this page with 'Alternate Layout', but a part had to be customized reconfigure the battery layout, so I sent them this diagram for a 14" x 7" battery to fit in the H8 / group 49 battery tray. I also confirmed the M6 bolt diameter and sent them a link to the cells I was using.

I'll make a simple box out of 1/2" baltic birch with a divider in the middle to prevent contact between + and - terminals. At the time of this writing I'm looking at just over $700 to build this battery. Seems like a lot of battery for $700, so I'm OK with it. Wish me luck!

Let us know. I want to build one for my upcoming build with Toshiba cells.

I'll start a new thread for the battery build once it gets going. Should be pretty straightforward, but not too many builds on here, and it's hard to find standard battery shaped designs anywhere. Everyone seems to build 16+" long strips or longer, which don't fit in my battery area. Anything but that is going to be custom buss bars.

There isn't much info here, so anything will be great. There's some Facebook group, but I don't have Facebook. I've never had it and don't plan on it any time soon.
These b stock ioxus are a good deal, and I bought one, but they are under a nhtsa recall and "might" short out and catch on fire. Caveat emptor and ymmv.
this is a new one but you can get B stock for $134
can be real cheap but

i have 1 ioxus SuperCap and may buy a second. They are $99 now on Droppnhz

Im doing my first “Just for the classified battery” 100aH or 200aH with balancer and bms and the cells are prismatic and flat. They should
im now in search for small reputable prismatic cell which can lay flat. Issue is these are new cells unlike the headway cells which are recycled cells.
What i want is to also add some type of BMS, people dont trust lithium cells not to explode.
my pack will start someone out with safe cells that have battery management added.
includes a balancer and blutooth and start at 100aH

well the weather is warming up and i think ill get aome audio done long as the rain blows.
The dh ones are looking more beat up looking than the one I got from big jeff.
I have a questions folks with more knowledge on the subject , this could be another option for the op since from what I read increasing increasing alternator voltage output increases the capacity to run more amps or higher current amps without doing anything else . Do you guys thinks this mod is worth the cost ? stage 1 raises the voltage to 14.6 and stage 2 to about 15.6 to the battery which is perfect for us running stock alternator with an agm battery . Please advice.
