Um, I guess I should have said that I'm tinkering with the idea of going
active, and am steering towards the 9887 because of it's price/feature
ratio. The ipod interface is a plus too.

While I'm all for using things that were once quality and in many cases still quality, I would just go for the 9887.

Its a great head unit, and works very well with the Ipod. Theres also a ton of info available here for your support should you need it.

I had a similiar combo: cda-7949 w/ the pra-h400. combo was great and allowed you many adjustments (crossover control, dB control for each speaker, time alignment and phase control). I ran toslink from the head unit into the processor. I was also able to integrate my ipod with an adapter from alpine called kca-801b which toggled through the ai-net cable allowed me to pipe in my ipod audio through the changer input while keeping my cha-624. it was a great system until the car got jacked from me......

How did you like the ipod interface using the kca-801b compared to the newer alpine decks?

Looks like the kca-801b will run me about $60 if I can find
one. Total cost to run active would be about $185, which is a little less
than buying a used 9887. Hmmm.......

I had my Ipod installed on a dock I grafted into the center console of my Accord so that it charged and I could easily select playlists from it. To the right of that, I had installed a simple toggle switch in order to activate the aux. input on the 7949. Worked very well with no added noise induced into my sound system.

The 7939 will allow you to control the pra-h400 remotely (must have the headunit remote though). It will give you 5 saved presets and 1 more at the pra-h400 fro a total of 6.

If you can find another pra-h400, you can daisy chain and have a "master" and a "slave" unit for unbeatable control over your system.

HTH
