Just wondered if anyone still run any kind of Isobaric enclosures? Back in like 1995 I ran the old Polk Audio 10's, in a Isobaric bandpass. Boxes were built by the owner of car audio place in town. Just had a Punch 40 running bridged to 4 of them. Placed in a couple local contests with them. Sounded great and was pushing about 130 db with them. I don't hear or see a lot about them.

Speaker "technology" combined with cheap power has allowed us to do the same thing with one driver. I tried Isobaric in the 80's and did not like it, I sucked it up and built a big box :(

My experience with isobariks were that they were super inefficient. They needed lots of power. Much like new subs of today that are meant for smaller boxes. So there really is no need for isobraik anymore. Nowadays you can get a single sub that works in a small box and needs a lot of power. :D

I'm working on my first build. I was thinking about doing isobaric with some AES 10's I grabbed from WRX. The Cadence TXA-750D just didn't put out a lot of power.

I think that's as far as I got with isobaric :) After looking into it, it's just not worth it.

Now they're in .6 cubic feet boxes, sealed, with a TXA-3002...also from WRX

He's good people...GREAT QUALITY for cheap ;)

This brings up an internal "fight" I have with myself for years...Sub enclosure design and construction is a lost art. Everyone is so focused on imaging and leveling and processing that this fine art has gone the way of the wind..The question I will always have in my head is does SQ actually sound better...That may seem like a silly question to anyone that reads it..Sound Quality is the name so of course it sounds better, right? My problem is once you crank up the car, roll down the windows what does SQ mean? I know when I had 10 or 12 speakers with gobbs of power to them and a couple of tens in bandpass with gobbs of power to them the sound was GREAT. It didnt matter if I had the windows up or down. Everytime I cranked my car I was AT the show. Who needs staging when you can feel like you are on stage at the show? Why worry about the direction of the sound when it can surround you? I've started down the road of SQ and I've heard a lot of sound quality cars..Nothing has impressed me as much as sound imersion of the old days, however. Every fad returns and on that day I will be the guy in the corner smiling...

The individual with the highest SQ score of MECA finals in 2007 had an isobaric enclosure. he had the second highest score at the 2008 MECA finals.
Yeah, but something tells me it wasn't because he ran an Isobaric enclosure. It's not like they sound bad or anything, in fact probably no different than an regular sealed setup, they just don't make sense these days with the drivers available.

I ran Isobaric in back in the days 4 12's 2 pair face to face. I would agree with Chad the technology in speaker construction today has mostly eliminated the need. The talk of isobarics sounding bad or sucking kinda makes me smile a bit as I wonder what those people were actually listening to. The inefficient issue is that basically your using 2 driver that make the same output as 1. The whole reason iso's were used was to save space and to have greater cone control as you actually couple the speakers and have 2 motor units working as a team controlling the cone. You could double the rated power into most iso set-ups and all that were done correctly that I heard sound outstanding. I feel the cone control is why some people still are using this method of sub loading today still.

I had a isobaric vented enclosure with two Oz 250ls in the early 90s and a tiny zapco mono amp. It sounded amazing but its basically the same output as having 1 sub.

Most of the reasons why its not often used now was brought up already.

I ran 4 12 Boston Pros (2 pair) on a SS 10.0 back when. It did NOT sound like poo. No real need for iso nowadays other than a conversation piece.

I have been tossing the idea on my upcoming install on a 6th order b iso encloure.

I just want to do something dif

The key for iso was to make the 12 that needed 2 cube work in 1 cube by using 2 drivers

Now you can buy a 12 that works in as little as .4

But again I am looking into this and may pursue on my upcoming install.

I did 2 Pioneer IMPP 8's from 94 in a 4th order iso using a single Autotek MM 66 and it was outstanding.

I remember that Advent and the Polk 6x9 setup. I too thought that Polk setup was the ****.

I've noticed a few people saying that Isobaric DOESN'T sound like ****, but I don't think anyone said they did. I said they sucked, but not because of sound quality, but because they didn't really offer anything to make them worthwhile.
