I just picked up an pristine '06 X3 from a friend.

no HK system. I would like a fairly serious upgrade - $2000 or less? or is that too small of a budget?

music lover with eclectic taste - jazz, classical, folk, rock, world etc. I do not need or want boomy bass, would be nice to try and use those goofy sub spaces under the seats tho.

Is there an amp in the back that can be swapped out with some sort of aftermarket harness?

class D amps look interesting.

really pretty lost at this point, just wanted to post and see if anyone was familiar with the car and maybe get a few ideas.

actual real tweeters would be a nice start. :)

I'm in So. California, would be willing to travel for the right installer.

Thanks for any help

You can use an intravii to convert the factory communications to alpine ainet, then run anything alpine makes. 4" coax high in the door, flat 8" woofers under the front seats
Intravee? looks interesting, I really do not use an iPod or iPhone tho, and with that stock head unit pretty limited?

I will probably use my iBasso DX90 as a source plugged into the AUX input (that needs to be installed still)

it's not a great solution while driving, i just can't think of any other ideas. all my music is in FLAC format. too bad there wasn't some sort of SSD or Hard Drive based system that would integrate easy.

Car audio really seems to like Apple, maybe i should convert all my FLAC to ALAC and go iPod? could i get the Album/Track to display on the stock head unit small display? might be asking too much!

Thanks again

I use a rocketfish blutooth module with fiber optic output plugged into an alpine processor. There are several flac/lossless apps for the iPhone.
With the stock system, the preamp for the system is built into the amp.

So the stock amp is in the rear or in the head unit?

I didn't think of that, yes possible to play FLAC on an iPod. as long as using Bluetooth most any tablet would even work? Alpine setup looks very versatile.

I think I'll add the CD changer and use a 7" tablet with HRT dSp plugged into the AUX input for now. link -> Product

would be cool if there was some sort of system with an SSD/Amp/DSP to hold music that would integrate easily.

mainly want to figure out if there is a stock amp and harness that can be changed and what to use.

4" component set - front stage, shallow 8" woofers to replace the stock ones under the seat.

Thanks for all the ideas, really helpful.
