So far I've bought the tweeters and crossovers.... need some suggestions on 6.5" woofers.

Tweeters: DLS Iridium 1i
Xovers: Swiss Audio STX20

The crossovers cross at 2800hz
Powering these with a Kenwood Excelon X4R

I've already deadened my doors. These are going into a 1993 Honda Prelude.
About 10 months ago I bought some ID XS-65's... but ran into $$ issues and had to sell them.

I'm looking for some 6.5" woofers that will put out some accurate bass, but does not have to be perfectly accurate.
I would also like the woofers to put out enough bass so I don't have to use my 12" subwoofer all the time. (ARC AUDIO 12D2 V3)

I can buy the ID XS-65 woofers from ebay for $220
They have the ID chameleon woofers for $200
There are also Focal HP-165A3 ACCESS woofers for $190

But I would like to stay around $150 for the pair, if possible.

What would you guys recommend for that price range ($150) for a pair of woofers?
Back in the old days I used to have Cerwin Vega comps, they sounded pretty good, but my tastes have changed as I've gotten older... not wanting bloated bass.

I know if I suggest to save up an extra $50, most of you will say to get the X-65's again.... but I want to see what my options are in the $150 range.

However, these would fall into my price range of $150.

I've searched for DLS, ID, Focal, Rainbow, Hertz, Morel, Massive, RE, ARC.... but not many of them just sell the woofers.. not having much luck.

Thanks

Are you bridging the rear channels to your sub? If not, you might be able to run active using the X4R. That'd give you flexibility to choose a woofer and a xover point that might work better. Have you looked in the classifieds? Lots of good deals there. Partsexpress is good, too.

CDT audio has some nice offering that dig down nice...you could also look through parts-express.com as they have many 6.5 woofer options (dayton audio, tang band, peerless, vifa)
I've heard of all those brands, except for vifa...
How would you rate these in terms of build quality and sound reproduction

Are these all better than the CV's I mentioned?

I was planning on using my Sony Mobile ES XM-2100G for my sub

Go onto parts express, lots in that price range or cheaper, and better quality than some of the names you've mentioned:)
The problem is.. I dont know anything about any of the brands parts express carries.
So I'll basically be guessing and I dont want to do that.
If someone could give me some insight on the brands offered I would be grateful.

Thanks

Did you get a chance to hear the XS-65's when you had them?? I had a set and they were awesome...but not much midbass (more midrange) and really need to rely on the sub for anything down low.

I currently have the CDT ES-6's and love them but pricey...can't comment on the CL line other than they look like CDT's entry level offering. I've always wondered how their Forum drivers sound...on for a good $$ but may not offer much midbass

I was using the CDT HD-M6 golds and they would kick like a mule (almost a small sub).

The amount of choices are almost overwhelming and that's what makes it hard to recommend anything but I do see Silver Flute's recommended alot...raw drivers seemed to be some of the best value for the dollar compared to car audio specific gear.

So what do you guys think about 4ohm vs 2ohm midbass woofers?
I notice there are many companies that offer the same woofers in 4 and 2ohm versions.
Which should I go for?

I would assume that since there's less resistance in the 2ohm, that they would be louder and require less power than the 4ohm... Is this a correct assumption?

According to my amp specs, I could run either 1 with no issues::
RMS Power Rating:
4 ohms: 75 watts x 4 chan.
2 ohms: 100 watts x 4 chan.
Bridged, 4 ohms: 200 watts x 2 chan.

being louder would depend on the amp design. requiring less power really depends on what you mean- there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Hey Turbo, I didn't see your last post before editing mine.

A little bit...but 2ohm drivers are limited choice's plus your amp is not rated to be bridged on a 2ohm load

I would stick with 4 ohm drivers...
According to the specs I posted above, it says the amp will run 100w x4 @ 2ohm... or am I not understanding that correctly.

Looked up my amp specs here:
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_12053_Kenwood-eXcelon-KAC-X4R.html

Also my tweeters are rated at:
Power Handling:
Peak: 160 watts per pair / 80 watts each
RMS: 100 watts per pair / 50 watts each
4 ohms impedance

If I'm going to be using a crossover for my comps... will that 75w @ 4ohm be split in half? 37.5rms going to the woofer and 37.5 going to the tweeter?

I fear I'm starting to over-think this.

your amp will provide more power to the 2 ohm speaker. Some Jl amp's (most popular that I know of) will deliver the same power from 1.5ohms to 4. The lower you drive an amp the more current it draws.

So basically what you're saying is that...
A) if I connect a 4 ohm speaker to my amp it will be getting 75w
B) if I connect a 2 ohm, my amp will feed it 100w.

Given the fact that my tweeters are rated at 4 ohm, I'm going to stick with 4 ohm.

Thank you very much for helping me solve that quickly.

Do you know if the power is cut in half when using a xover? 1/2 to tweeter and 1/2 to woofer? Or will they both get 75w rms?
