I'm going to be purchasing a JL Audio HD 1200/1 as the final major component of my current build. I am only going to purchase a new amp, just cuz. I'm not quite ready for the purchase yet, but I'm open to a good deal if one comes along for a new amp. I got a great deal on a new 600/4 a little while back from SE. So I occasionally check ebay, since you never know what might come along, and the other day I saw a potential purchase.
This guy was selling a "new" unopened 1200/1, purchased from an authorized dealer, with the 2 yr warranty in place. He said he was selling it after deciding to go a different way with his install. He also included a picture of the amp in the box, with original wrapping, padding, etc. Looked promising. I sent him a couple questions about how long he'd had it, and if he had the original receipt. He said he purchased it through his insurance company after his vehicle was stripped, and that he had no paperwork. He maintained that the warranty could be honored at any authorized JL dealer. I explained to him that without the original paperwork from an authorized dealer, JL would not honor any warranty. So I chose to pass on the purchase. Someone else bought it the day before the listing ended. Definately shady.
A couple days later, I was looking at another listing for some HD amps from another seller, and in the pictures, I found the exact picture that he had used in his listing!
Glad I dodged that one! Be careful out there!
