So I have been back on forth several times on this issue, and still don't know what I want to do, mostly because I have no experience doing this setup. Hopefully someone here can provide some insight as to what the better option is.

The setup I am doing is as follows:
2-Way Active fronts, Hertz 165XL Mids and Hertz ML280.3 Tweeters
JBL MS8 fed from factory HU
JL10W3v3 in a sealed enclosure
JL HD900/5 Amp for Sub and undetermined for speakers
Another Amp to power the 165XL's likely a JL XD400/4 bridged.
3.5" rear speakers of some sort

Initially, my plan was to use only the HD900/5, and run 100W RMS to both tweeters/mids. I would then use the Hertz Dieci 87.3 Coax for rears and power them off the internal MS8 amplifier as they are only 30W RMS cont.

However, after more research and planning, I want to feed the XL's more power. This lead me to thinking about getting the XD400/4 and bridging it to provide 200W RMS for the XL's, and using two of the main HD900 channels for the tweeters, providing them 100W RMS each. (Their cont power handling is 90W RMS, and realistically I'm sure the gain will be so low for them that it won't matter)

This setup would leave me with two unused 100W RMS channels on the HD900. So I thought I could power the rears on those channels, however that might be overkill on power for them.

Finally, I read that using Coax for rear fill is kind of pointless, so should I consider something like the HL70 midrange driver and run it in the rear? (Then I have a mid set if I do ever decide to attempt a 3-way setup in the front too). The HT70 can handle a bit more power too, so may be more appropriate powered by the HD900.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!

do it.

MS-8 will apportion whatever signal needs to the rears, the source material commits and having higher headroom in the surround means the imaging will not collapse at high output as it might with just the MS-8's internal amp pushing the surround.

I second the use of coaxials for rear fill. They're mounted in the rear deck of a sedan. I'm using cheap coaxials powered by MS-8 now, but I'm seriously considering an upgrade in speakers as well as changing to 85W x 2 of external amplifier power.

Awesome, thanks! I see the Hertz Energy Line has a 4" coax that plays a bit lower and handles more power. Plus you can adjust the tweeter up to 10 degrees so even better
