I recently purchased a set of Image Dynamics xs57 componets. I am running them passively on a hifonics brx 640.4. first off let me say they sound amazing! Very impressed with the sound. Sadly after only a few days of ownership one of the mids developed a buzzing/fuzzy sound. Then a few days later the other mid developed the same issue. With my previous set up JL C3's (Also a nice set,) I had the same issue develop, but I ran that set actively on a older MTX amp. Eventually the tweeters stopped playing and the mids play but with a buzzing sound coming from then. This time around I set the gains with a mulitimeter to try to minimize clipping. What could be the issues that is causing my speakers to fail?

if your amp is leaking direct current it could be heating the voice coils?

other than over-driving the speakers I don't know how you'd blow speakers without hearing it, unless you were grossly overpowering them.
How would one test to see if it is leaking DC current? if so would I need new wires because I have had the exact same issue with 2 seperate amps and 2 seperate sets. I ran the Jl c3's with the MTX amp that put out 75rms. The hifonics amp is also brand new and put out 80rms per channel at 4ohms, and 320rms at 4 ohms bridged. I contacted Image Dynamics and they said I could tun them with the 320rms bridged. I'm totally lost as what is the best route to prevent this from continuing to happen.

Turn amp on, with no speaker leads attached to the amp, set DMM to DC voltage and measure each amp output. If you are getting readings of .5 volt and above (usually see 2 volts or so) there is a good chance your amp needs servicing.

Is this just the same as setting the gains? If not should I play a tone or just touch the leads to the outputs and hopefully getting a reading of below .5

Just turn the amp on, no need to have input or output connected to the amp. Also if the amp is in question (CL find or such) and is unknown to its state of operation this is a good test to try before ruining other equipment.
