Correct power level for Tweets?

1158 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  67StangMan
So I've decided to get Pioneer's component set TS-C720PRS which consists of a 6.5" mids and a tweets. It has a passive XOver. My DIYMobileAudio education had taught me to go active. :D I want to run the Mid and Tweets active. What wattage do I need to push to the tweets?

If you were to do a search [perhaps in review section ] for : TS-C720PRS ;)
You may need just 5 watts or you may need 75. It all depends on your listening habits.

With my last system, I used a 100w x 4 amp for my 720 mids and a/d/s/ tweeters. I could drive the amp into clipping on the mids, but I'm sure the amp was just loafing along on the tweeters.
You're better off using more power than less.

At least you can use the amp for something else if you decide to change the system.

I always like to have amps that aren't one trick ponies.
Mark Eldridge once said "power is like money in the bank. It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it".

I'd go with as much power as you can afford on EVERY driver. Worst case, you don't use it.

I'm got 350 watts available for my tweets.

I always like to have amps that can be used for more than one thing.

I'm with both of these gentlemen.
First off, I just want to say that I think the PRS set is a fantastic buy. I am currently running the 520 and am very impressed with the detail and output. I am running them active off of an older SS 644s which is 75x4. Gains are barely turned up on tweet side and less than half on mid side and they just sing. Those tweets are on the brighter side at first but mine have mellowed out a bit after extended listening on recent road trips.
I am thinking however to swap out the 644s for an old Ref Class A Picasso and see how they manage on less rated wattage but perhaps cleaner wattage?
Thanks gang. I think I'll run my PPI A300 Art Amp on the tweets.
