I´am kind of obsessed with this DIY minimalist 2.1 SQ system project...

So, I have this crazy idea: To build a custom speaker, with a 4" mid-woofer with a planar tweeter /(a sort of a coaxial driver), so the tiny planar should not interferer with the overall mid output and response.

I choose those drivers:

Tang-band-w4-1720

Dayton Audio ptmini 6 planar
https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-ptmini-6-planar-tweeter-6-ohm--275-083

The final look must be something like this:

Could this works? Any thoughts? Any advice?

Have you considered just going with a concentric mount driver like the new Daytons? Or Morel?

https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-cx120-8-4-coaxial-driver-with-3-4-silk-dome-tweeter-8-ohm--295-384

https://www.parts-express.com/morel-integra-424-hybrid-series-4-point-source-coaxial-full-range--297-024

And of course, there are is the car audio branded product from Morel and Illusion in similar sizes.

Yes, of course I considered these... But I'm More like diy'er :D

Besides, Morel hybrid Integra = 2 times this project cost.

C4CX, x4 $$$

Planar tweeters by design have very good horizontal dispersion and minimal vertical dispersion. You can use that to your advantage by carefully selecting mounting location and orientation to avoid reflections from nearby hard surfaces. Perhaps more importantly, you will need to make sure that the BACK of the tweeter is not causing reflections back into the midrange and screwing up its response. One way to do so is to make sure that the mid is crossed low enough so that the sound waves are long enough to simply go around the tweeter. Gently curving the shape of the back of the tweeter might also help

And all that being said, while I think experimenting is great, it might be easier and you Willmore then likely get better results simply by using a well designed coincident speaker like the Illusion C4 or the Morel Tempo 402.

I dont know wich position would be better for tweeter dispersion: vertical? Horizontal? 45 degree?

Have any idea?

Vertical will give better horizontal coverage and vice versa

Depending wher it's mounted

Off axis probably a vertical mount , on axis horizontal

Cool idea .

For what it is worth, Radian has a driver setup that looks very similar to your concept. I am sure there are other speaker designs that use a similar configuration, but I don't stay up on all of the Pro Audio stuff out there. "Patrick Bateman" would be the man to answer that question.
