Digged up a pic of stock Sonata's plastic wheel well cover. To my surprise it's "deadened" with what seems to be autocarpeting with self-adheisive backing.
Is this really effective? I'd assume it is since manufacturers use it but i don't exactly see the point to be honest......

I think it's under the battery... maybe a chemical absorbtion mat? For those "just in case" cases?
Pic doesnt show but it's on both sides

Don't forget that manufacturers now have to put a certain percentage of recyclable components into a car these days - these 'mats' are recyclable and take up a percentage of the must have recyclable materials, so probably not even there for soundproofing purposes but economics..

My wife's 2011 Chrysler 300 has this "carpet" on it's inner fenders as well, and it does cut down on certain types of road noise. It really helps on gravel roads, etc...

Maybe someone thought it would be terrible if someone sitting on the front bumper was able to hear road noise from the wheel arches...
