What do you want to know?

Sound Quality wise the newer ODR destroys the P99. Night and day difference. The RS-D7R (RS-D7x/xii) are both also miles better. I personally would go for the RS-P90 instead of the P99 for the money.

Even the non ODR P9 is a little better than the p99 in my opinion (though it's fairly close.)

I would guess the P50 is worse but have never owned one so can't comment.

which one is worth the bucks
Depends how easy bucks are to you and what you want to achieve.

You can get:

P9 for $500
p99rs for $1000
rs-d7rii/rs-d7xiii + rs-p90 for $2500

Personally I wouldn't go for the p99rs. I would prefer to spend half the amount on the p9 and then if you want the ipod controls then spend the $500 on a digital dock and decent dac for it which would yield far better results. (you can also save a bomb on shorter RCA cables if you are one to spend on such things.)

For me the ODR unit is worth the extra. It will bring out that top sparkle in any system. Finding a set in America would be next to impossible however. You will have to buy from Europe or Asia.

For reference I have had all the pieces mentioned (a part from the rs-p99 and the standard p90 headunit.)

Secondhand.

Look around Europe. Or on yahoo auctions if you have an exporting contact in Japan.

Mine cost me £1500 for both from Sweeden. I think I made a loss when I sold it a few months ago. The processor went to Thailand, The headunit to India.

I have had the JDM version of the P9 and currently own the JDM P99RS and the P99RS wins hands down over the P9...in my book. Why spend another $500 for the extra external Ipod equipment when the P99 has all those functions built in? It ends up costing the same. Not to mention the P99 does not have the x-over limitations that the P9 has.

If you have a serious interest in an ODR set (rs-d7rii + rs-p90) - I've talked to a friend and may be able to hook you up.

Send me a message if you are.

and to answer narvarr's question. A specialised dac produces a hell of a lot better sound than that inside the p99. (but then if you're doing it, there isn't a lot of point in running a pioneer combo at all and may as well use a seperate processor (and potentially no cd player.)

True, but my comment was only in reference to using an external DAC with the P9 combo. As far as the ODR combo...it would be worth the extra coin and effort. If you really can get the ODR combo for that price, I may be sending you a PM as well. ;)
Oh, and check the specs on the RS-P99x...NICE!

$2400 new? in America?

I can't beat that. If they are in America they aren't authorized, and thinking about it that is very very close to dealer cost (can't be bought by American dealers.)

I was talking about dac and p9. The dac wouldn't actually matter which unit you used it with. It would run separate to the headunit.

I can't confirm this but I've been told the rs-p90 is better than the rs-p99. Specs are better in places but I've been told they cut a lot of corners in quality to make it sell-able in the current economic climate.

So $3800 or so + probably $100 shipping + your import tax (unless you can convince them to under-declare it - but they won't as it's too big a risk) would make it close to $4500.

Interested too.

I think I know all the British retailers and the discount they will offer is next to nothing (I tried.)

The cheapest retailer (as far as I am aware) does it for around £3000 ($4800) - granted that includes 20% tax which you wouldn't pay.
