I used a DMM to set the gain on my Alpine PDX600.1 and the VC reading isn't stable. The reading goes from low to high and repeats itself over and over. Is this typical for an amp reading? How do I know which VC reading to choose from?

50HZ Tone CD.
Alpine PDX 600.1
12 Inch Diyma SUB - Sealed 1.20 ft^3.
Volume was at 75% of max.
Starting the gain at 0, I slowly turn it up to get my correct reading.
Subwoofer was still connected to the amp during the testing. I was referring to the tutorial and they said to keep the speaker connected.

Any thoughts or concern?

Well it's true. The DMM method does not work, and usually results in less power to the speaker. Let your ears guide you.

I wish whoever invented the DMM method never did.
What is the ear method then? Care to elaborate or a good tutorial link?

Thanks!!
