Do I need a relay?

1814 Views 41 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  BobTheBirdTurd
Hello,

We are using Helix .2 DSP and running a remote turn on out from DSP without any relay. We are about to add other 3 amps to my friend system. Do I need to add a relay to the remote turn on?

Thank you,

You should be fine without it. Relay probably draws more amps than the 3 amp remote turn ons.

3 new amps plus existing one(s)? Idk what the limit is on the DSP remote out but you might want to review that carefully. If you draw more current that it’s capable then that remote output will permanently fail.

I interpreted 3 total but maybe I misinterpreted? 3 total will be fine.

My Helix Mini turns on 7 amps with no problem.

If you want to use a relay here is what I used for my minidsp

Depends on the DSP. Helix has like 500mA capacity which is a lot. Mosconi DSP on has 100mA. Amp draw is different for every Amp but is usually 50-75mA based on my research. Relay must have a diode to prevent voltage spike on power off.

My M4DSP turns on 3 other amps with no issues. You should be good.

Total is 4 amps. One Zapco 650.6(will upgrade soon), three Mosconi 2/10. How can I find out the limit on the DSP remote? Thank you,

4 total.

Thank you. All Helix DSP have 500mA? My friend got the old Helix .2, where can I find those capacity?

I found it in the spec sheets of the DSPs I was looking at Finding current draw of the Amp is more difficult as most I looked at don't publish the number, so used a best guess.

I was looking at the Helix Pro and Ultra, they both had 500mA from what I recall. This screenshot is for an Ultra. Look at Max Remot Output Current.

Thank you, Sir. Just look at Max remote output on DSP .2 and it is 500mA.
this is a good point. You could measure your remote current draw of all your amps to see if you are below the threshold.

Thank you, Sir. Will do that this weekend. Hope all not more than 500mA.
With 500mA, I wouldn't worry about a relay. With a Mosconi and it's 100mA I would unless I was only running 1 amp. Just thought I would take a look at another popular DSP, the MiniDSP C-DSP 8 x 12 and its only 100mV also.
