I’m looking at buying a prefab enclosure from Fox acoustics for my Jeep Gladiator. It’s a 1.3cf ported enclosure for a single 10. Almost all of the subs I’m looking at recommend a 1cf enclosure. What are the consequences of the extra .3cf? Could I just make a .3cf block of wood and secure it inside the enclosure to bring the size down to 1cf? Or would that mess with the tuning?

A little over will not hurt anything. May give a little bit more low end. .3 isn’t enough to worry about.

MY JL responded very well to a slightly larger ported enclosure (1.75 tuned for 30 vs rec 1.3 tuned for 33).
If i knew how to use the modeling programs i would model the rec ported enclosure vs the spec of the ported enclosure my sub is in now.

I think your best bet then is to model the enclosure in WinISD or similar program. Assume the volume provided by manufacturer is correct (or measure it yourself by filling with packing peanuts then removing and measuring their displacement, measure the port length and cross-section, then input the subwoofer you plan to use. From there, model the box again with a smaller volume but port length and cross-section the same. That should give you an idea of what the difference will be if you were to add some blocks inside.

also, more important than a bit big or small is the port tune. A lot of boxes come tuned from mid 30s to 45hz.

The subs they recommend are listed in the listing for the box. And it’s tuned at 35. Get one of the recommended subs and you will be golden.

Maldonado of the subs listen I would recommend the jl audio 10w1. If I’m going with a cheap/less expensive sub I’ll use jl every time. The filter down all the best stuff they come up with down to their lower lines after the new pixie dust goes away. I’m not a huge jl fan but for lower end subs they’re are very hard to beat. That’s just my opinion. I put a pair in both my kids vehicles and they beat them todeath and they never flinched. I used the 10/12 w0 subs.

The subwoofer and reflex enclosure really should be aligned. Some things that can happen are port noise, over excursion, peaky response, and other issues.

You should have an idea of how much power input and spl output you desire. If the port is too small and your trying to get too much spl the air escaping the port will chuff.

If the tuning is too high the port will no longer provide control over the subwoofer drivers excursion for frequencies below the tuning. Damage can happen quickly under only moderate power if not taken into consideration.

You may end up with a hella bunch of 50hz and a hella little 40hz and below, depending on how the actual tuning works out with your specific driver.

Will it be bass? Sure and maybe a lot of midbass and little actual low bass. If you’re not prepared to factor everything involved in a reflex enclosure then it might make more sense to go sealed. If you can give the box specs as stated in an earlier post I’ll try to remember to look at this thread and play around on winsld. I model drivers for fun as odd as that may sound lol.

that’s fine but the subs they suggest are on the site and they suggest them for a reason. I know you know this but the sun you mentioned is not one of them. Did you look at the specs and the list for the box?

try it and see how it sounds/measures, but indeed as others mentioned the port is a tuning/loading device that intereacts with the music and displacement in and out of the box. The only reason I say try it is because I think its reasonably easy to close up/plug up a port. Just saying in case you already commited to it.

Yes, you can simply do that, and as long as the block of wood isn't within a few inches of the inner port opening, it won't affect the tuning. Try it without the block first, and then try it with the block...

Yup. Had that hooked to my Boston Rallys up front and an OZ ME15.2 in the back of an 07 Xterra. That setup rocked!!!
