Well I sent some info and pictures of my Hertz 280.3 tweeters, they responded with this

"Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for providing the requested information.

After an accurate analysis of all the materials that you sent us, we would like to inform you that we are unable to verify the authenticity of the product only according to the provided pictures.

Therefore, we recommend that you purchase the product within the country you live in, the USA, in order to enjoy full assistance for further checks on the product authenticity.

Following please find again the contact information of “Elettromedia-USA”, our exclusive partner for the US:"

When I contacted the Elettromedia-USA he said that the serial number did not come up in the database. Here is the pictures of them, ill just wait and see if I get any more info from them. I guess I learned my lesson, lol.

I got them from amazon.

Here is another email from them.

"Dear Sir,

Thank you for your email.

In this case, please note that you can directly verify the authenticity of the product by scanning the QR code and so registering the product to our website.

We also take this occasion to inform you that by registering the product it will be possible for you to obtain one additional year of warranty through the seller."

Which I did and it went through fine.

It's is possible that the US distributor is not interested in confirming the product is not authorized in th US, even if genuine, try contacting the European distributor.

Don't file a claim with eBay for a fake product until you attempted to contact the manufacturer in Europe

Could be wrong, but sounds like either gray market or fakes. Even if it is gray market, they would be able to track the sale of or know that they came up missing you would think. They clearly stated according to your quoted input that they can not confirm authenticity. Well that only leaves......

I'm just speculating like everybody else, but it seems to me that they aren't going to confirm a non-authorized purchase as authentic regardless. I suspect that they can clearly tell whether yours is real or not, so the fact that they didn't tell you it's fake makes me believe that it's real, but they don't want to tell you that because it undermines their desires for you to buy from an authorized seller.

If amazon sells it directly, it is gray market product offering their own warranty, not a manufacturers warranty, although if you register it good companies may cover them.

I may be wrong but gray market, means a big manufacturer or a major authorized seller, dumped large quantities of certain models to a smaller vendor that is an not authorized reseller. Like OCS and Woofers. They may have bought loads of electronics directly from the manufacturer or maybe even an authorized dealers like Crutchfield, needing cash for new inventory and selling them at a discount and sometimes at a loss.

Sure, why not make $10.00 per unit selling 2,000 pieces to whoever wants them. It is better to have that cash on hand rather than waiting for buyers of one unit at the time like us to make more and not knowing when that inventory will be gone.

There's a difference between unauthorized and gray market though. Depending upon how the manufacturer networks, stock can come from a distributor or dealers dumping for quick sales which is generally how unauthorized retailers get their stuff. Then gray market are items that were slated to sell outside of the US, or wherever, but are imported back to sell. Both are illegitimate, just different ways.... same result pretty much.
