you only need to sand between layers if the resin you are using contains wax. if it does the wax will form a seal in a manner of speaking and smooth over the surface. this makes it hard for the following layer to adhere to the dry layer thus promoting separation. bondo brand contains wax and that is why most people frown on using it.
We used to build offshore powerboats.... Just about any "commercially" packaged (small quantities) of polyester resin will have wax. If you do have wax, a good scuff with 80 grit between layers is fine.
Very helpful indeed. I also am going to have a go at fiberglassing soon. I also purchased Bondo brand resin (from Home Depot) since that was all that was available. But will now give a good rough up with sandpaper between layers. Thanks for the info.
