I'm helping my younger brother install a sound system in his 1984 Grand Prix he inherited. The car is completely stock. He is on a tight budget but wants a full clean sound system. The stock radio and one 4x10 dash speaker isn't cutting it. So here is where I need help. I am looking at 3 different speakers that will run on a 4 channel amp. That being said would it be better to install

1. Pioneer A Series speakers with a sub
2. JBL GTO speaker with a sub
Or
3. Alpine Type R with NO sub.

Are the Alpines worth the extra money at the expense of not being able to afford a sub?
Like I said he is on a tight budget and isn't looking for an amazing sound system, he just wants a good quality one without breaking the bank.

Thank you in advance for any help!

The Alpine Type R is nice but you don't need a 1,000 watt subwoofer because then you need a 1500 watt class D monoblock to light it up without straining itself, you can have similar results with the Alpine Bassline $65/each or the NVX NSW124 $70 or any one of many others but choosing a $250 subwoofer for a tight budget system is not thinking clearly..

You want a balanced system, not a bass heavy ghetto blaster.
Choose a 4-channel Class AB 100 Wrms x 4 channel amplifier and use the front channels for the 2-ways and bridge the other two channels for mono and drive the sub..

A class AB/D amplifier is ideal because it drives the front stage with Class AB topology and the Class D section drives the sub..

Design the system based on your charging system capacity and not the other way around, a big power system don't mean jack if the charging system can't support it but there are plenty of (not so smart) people that will tell you otherwise..

They will tell you things like "well since you only listen to it a couple hours a day you'll be fine" or "since you never listen at full volume you'll be fine" just use your head..

The Polk Audio DB6501 2-way is a fine choice and very affordable at $140/pr. There dozens of choices and millions or opinions but be more reraslistic with your system goals.

I'm sorry I think you misunderstood me. I'm not talking about an Alpine type R subwoofer. I was talking about door speaker.

So is it better to get
Two Jbl gto 6.5 and two 6x9
Or
Two Pioneer A Series 6.5 and two 6x9?
With both of these options I would get a used sub and amp.

The other option would be two Alpine Type R 6.5 and two 6x9.
Since the Alpines cost double what the jbls cost he would not be able to afford a sub. So is it better to have cheaper door speakers with a sub or the nicer Alpine type R door speakers without a sub? Does this question make sense?

I'm lost here, as none of these options are anything I'd consider, but the timing is good and I'm willing to donate to your project (I'm trying to clear out some gear that's sitting in my garage cabinets). I have a nice pair of Alpine 6.5 coax's I pulled from the rear doors a couple years ago which you can have for the cost of UPS ground to your place, if you want 'em. Probably $15 or so...?

He can only put $400 into it right now. Obviously that won't go far and that's the reason I'm looking at Lowe end stuff but I want to get the best bang for his buck. I will be purchasing something's used to make his dollar go further.

@ XSIV SPL do you have any suggestions?

I own the Alpine type R's. I have a component set in front with coaxials in rear (Crewcab Truck). The midbass is pretty much nonexistent. The doors are not treated but no way that can explain this lack of midbass. I think the highs and mids (other than midbass) sound pretty good but the tweeters are a bit harsh at higher volumes. I have them in factory dash location reflecting off windshield.

here's a quick search of a setup

Amazon.com : Precision Power P900.4 900-Watt Phantom Series Class D Full Range 4-Channel Amplifier : Vehicle Multi Channel Amplifiers : Car Electronics

http://www.amazon.com/JBL-GTO608C-6-5-Inch-Component-System/dp/B0024JARH6

Pioneer FH-X720BT Double Din CD receiver w/ Built In Bluetooth - Newegg.com

leaves you about $60 for a sub. You can probably find a used 10" alpine type R with a box for that price on CL

If anything I would pick up that amp first then decide on the rest of the components. Its a pretty good deal on a good amp, new. I have never used one, but has great reviews all around. You could use 2 channels for the fronts and bridge the other 2 for your sub.

Well, I checked out the Alpines I have, (Type R, SPR-60), and while they'll do pretty well as a mid-tweet coax, they will probably not offer up much mid-bass, at least not at any appreciable volume, as brumledb notes previously. (PM replied, BTW)

I don't really know of much good gear on the cheap floating around out there at the moment, but if I run across something, I'll put it up here for your consideration :)

It looks like you have a few viable options going here though.

2 ohms on the jbls. Gets more power.

I dont like the type rs at all to be honest. Their best r model seems to be the 6.5" pointoaurce coaxial.

Skip it and grab the gto for a budget build.

The sony gs component sets are also a good choice.

Silk dome preferred but the metal isnt bad.

and these are a great set for the price

Id take the Sony silks and pioneers over the type r
