i have been trying to upgrade the stereo in my 2002 infiniti i35. bose 200 watt 6 cd system. i've been told by one engineer that there is an amp behind the radio. another told me that there is an amp in each speaker and the speakers run @ 1 ohm. i'msure they have a proprietary wiring harness...
so i'm thinking if i change the head unit i just need to get the wire adaptor to convert to bose and leave the rest alone. frankly, i was hoping for more...
if i change door speakers, where do i find speakers that perform well @ 1 ohm? do i bypass the individual speaker amps? what about the sub?
i think bose just builds propriety stuff to make it difficult to work on.
any ideas?
thanks... shake

first things. if you plan to do serious audio work on your car, then you need to spend a litttle bit extra and get the chop manual for your car. the dealer's part dept should have it or tell you what site you can order it from. this will tell you the fact you need. your car is an 02 so you amy have to drop 100$ or more because your car is newer. i hoope that helps

I am not familar with the vehicle. But, I have dealt with quite a few Bose systems, many times each speaker will have an individual amp.

Have a look under your seats you may find the amp there. Or they could mounted as part of enclosure for the speaker. This may allow you to bypass the amp, and just access the speaker wires there.

Either way, pull the OEM headunit out, do some testing with a DMM, to establish the actual impedence of the system.

Good luck

yes, Bose makes their stuff unique. Only experience I have with Bose was with a Mazda Miata. That system had separate amps for left and right speakers, and the speakers were 0.5 ohms each... the advantage was that an amp the size of a cigarette box was putting out 25-50 watts, where a standard 4 ohm speaker would see less than 3-12 watts (I think.. been a while since I did the math or worked on it.) Anyway, point is, Bose is definitely unique, and to modify any part of the system, the easiest thing to do may be to just change the whole thing (it's been done so much with so many headaches, it has its own name...Bosectomy)

If you just want to change the head unit, it might be possible, but i'd probably suggest changing the speakers too (to standard 4 ohm) and bypassing the Bose amp(s). And yes, you'll need to find the info on the wiring harness so you can properly attach the wires.

Not experienced with your particular model, but current Infiniti "de_bosed" guy here. Its not that Bose is trying to screw you over, its just cheaper for them. The lower the impedence of the speaker, the smaller the amplifiers can be. I would strongly recommend you bypass any Bose equipment in your signal chain. Get a new head unit, speakers, and even a new dedicated amplifier if you're going for real quality.

I've worked on a bunch of Bose vehicles (GM, Nissan, etc...) and the speakers typically range from 1 ohm to 2. I've never seen 3 ohm speakers from Bose. Either way, without the factory equalization, they sound like crap (well, *more* like crap).

It's pretty typical in Nissan vehicles for the Bose system to have an amp on each speaker inside the enclosure the speakers are in.
