You would want to have an enclosure to control excursion/xmax. With mids playing 300/400Hz and up you dont need an enclosure since you will have hard time to come even close to drivers x-max if mid is capable of 3-5mm xmax. with open back panels (A-pillars/dash top) you will have less coloration, at least with majority of mids, and also there is no benefit pushing small mid too low, all you will get will be higher distortion in lower registers and lower power handling. Decent midbass driver with correct install will outperform small mid big time in the range arround 200-300Hz and bellow.
