I'm curious if there is a way to increase the power supplied by a USB port on a head unit to charge a phone faster?

If the port is also used for communication, you are limited to 0.5A (at least for USB 2.0 spec). I'm sure you could get in there and tinker around with the wiring to physically enable more current flow, but it would be ill advised.

Yes I know, but I'd like to be able to still receive calls in the car. Might just have to deal with the trickle charging.

one last try is a new shorter 1.5 ft and thick cable. Some cables are too thin inside or drops too much voltage on a long run. Alternative is the power adapter that plugs into the cig/DC port.

I have a P99 and it only outputs 500mA over USB. I'd be happy to get that to 1A.

I can't use the external power adaptor unless there is a way to rig the two together, but doesn't seem like there is anything that exists.

Perhaps you could do some DIY with a 5v fixed voltage regulator

Use a USB Y cable and add a 2.1 amp USB 12 volt cig charger. Will charge your phone in no time.

Use a similar method to power my USB bluray drive for my carpc install

You can't change what the HU puts out. Get a 2A cig charger and connect your phone via bluetooth to your hu.
