installation tips: deadening and clay (pics)

hi everyone,

i have a few question on installation, because my car doesn't have much room between the inner skin and the wound-down window's glass, i've made a little prototype from paper and an mdf ring, it seems to fit alright but only if fitted at an angle to the skin. in other words the top of the speaker will be closer to the skin than the bottom.

here's a picture, as u can see, if the speaker is mounted parallel to the skin, it wont fit !! if the speaker is moved further from the skin, it wont have enough room beneath the door trim (plastic)

the skin is actually vertical and the GLASS is on an angle, but i couldnt do this in my graphics program. here are my questions:

1. what kind of clay is actually used and what kind of store is it purchased from eg. arts store, hardware store. what exactly am i after ?

2. how is the mdf ring actually fixed to the skin, because the clay is pliable, its impossible to tightly bolt the mdf to the skin. and if the mdf isnt bolted, then the nut will move and eventually fall off the bolt.

3. lastly, where is the best place for 6sqft of deadening (per door). on the outter skin, inner skin etc .. ?

I would recommend cutting a semi-circular baffle for the bottom part. using that much clay is not a good idea. After all, the clay will get really soft when you park your car in the sun. Clay should only be used to fill small gaps, where you squeeze it in.

6 sq ft? that's like nothing at all....not even sure if you'll notice a difference....

but....i'd put that on the inner door skin....right around the speaker....
thanks derek and david.

derek, thanks, im buying a dynamat extreme door kit which is 12sqft so i was going to use 6sqft per door and seal up the service holes.

david, thanks again, are you suggesting using a whole mdf ring for the speaker and then attached a semi-ring to the bottom of the first ring (semi-circle) to take up some space on the lower half ? and then use the clay ? i'd like to construct a perfect ring cut at an ANGLE but i dont see any way this would be possible (it would basically be a wedge)
Yeah, The wedge thing was what I was trying to say. LoL i typed that message while I was at work and has to rush it so that I wouldn't get caught :)

I bought great damping stuff from a guy on this form, his name is rick. Search for him in the "door damping" thread. He'll hook you up. Spend about $100 for a roll of sound damping mat. It'll be a bit more than you need, but you'll always want to keep adding more anyway!

Peace.

Way better deal than Dynamat/Extreme. Unless you're getting it like dirt cheap.

i'll definately consider the raammatt, and i'd prefer it over the dynamat (for value). HOWEVER the AUD (australia dollars) of the dynamat (12sqft) is $130 delivered. and the RAAMMATT is $100 USD = $130 AUD. so its the same price, but then i have to send it over to australia !!!! and 60sqft would weigh a tonne !

so you're getting 5x as much....for....roughly the same price :)

12 sq feet isn't going to do anything for you....might as well pop the cash for a lot of it....

you get 3 or 4 layers on each door skin....inner and outer...you'll start noticing a difference...12 sq feet is going to give you one layer......on ONE door....

Oops, My mistake. I failed to mentioned that for $100 (actually it'll be like $90 + shipping), you get 62.5 sq ft :) Although 62.5 SQ ft is a lot. If you plan on having a lot of bass in your ride, I would consider getting two rolls or a roll and a half (mainly for the doors as well as your trunk). Since shipping is expensive, take advantage of order a lot at once.
