I'm having a really tough time picking speakers for my 2010 RAV4. This is my first audio upgrade, but I've done a lot of reading on various forums.
I went to the local store to listen to some Alpine Type R SPR-60C's. They sounded good, but the guy pointed me at the JL C2-650's. To my newbie ears, the JL's sounded smoother. One thing I'm really trying to avoid is the harsh tweeters that people talk about on various speakers and I thought the tweeters on the R's were just a touch bright and detached. They also had some JL C3-650's. To my ear, they sounded a little better, but certainly not $150 better. The snob in me really wants the C3's though.
Here's where I've got myself confused. In online reviews, people seem to like the C2's, but some people have issues with the tweeter cutting out for 10-20 seconds at higher power. It also kills me that you can get them for $100 less online, but I don't want to be one of those guys that listens at the store and buys online - especially when I want the store to install my amp.
The other speakers I'm really interested in are the Focal Polyglass 165 VB from WoofersEtc. It's last year's model that you can get for $300. I know they're not an authorized dealer, but I did my homework and I'm pretty sure that they aren't fake from WoofersEtc. They get fantastic reviews, but there are no local dealers, so I can't listen to them and I'm very slightly concerned that they don't have the smoother silk dome tweeters. Some people call them "bright".
So here's the question. Should I buy the legit, nice to the dealer, JL's that I like the sound of or the better reviewed, unauthorized Focal's that the researcher in me screams is a better product?
