Ok, I've been over on caraudioforum and elitecaraudio asking about shallow oriented component sets. A few options I'm looking at is CDT EF-61 Neo Slim, Focal 165v Slim, DLS Pro Slimline (PS6), Phoenix Gold Elite 6's, and a couple others. So far the Elites look best and Focal and DLS are highly suggested as well.

Now, on ECA, I came across Seas CA18RNX, and got me thinking about a do it yourself setup of cost isn't too bad. Now the Seas, at least the CA18RNX seems to be too deep for my application. I'm limited to 2.5" including using a spacer.

Now my question for you guys is which driver/tweeter combos should I look at in a DIY setup?

Limitations are simple:
-2.5" max mounting depth for woofer, tweeter unrestricted at this time
-max price for all should fit within a $300 budget(not really a budget, but rather I feel more than that is just not worth a simple set of speakers)

That's about it. They'll be run off an amp that fits the driver accordingly, not picked yet, will bass off driver.

If you feel like suggesting, let my know if I should just stay with a premade component set or go the DIY way.

That's it.

The Phoenix Gold Ti Elite are a higher end set. They take more power, have a wider frequency response, and better crossover than the other sets on your list. I would think these would be a good start if you cannot listen to all of these sets. If it were me deciding this would be a no brainer.

As far as a DIY set.....You are limited with the 2.5" depth. The SEAS are 3.05" deep.

Just get the Elites and give them 150-200 watts a side and enjoy! Not sure where to find them on the net though???? Used to be on ebay or froogle for $300-$350....seem to be out of stock now?

Oh, I second the PHAZE AUDIO/TUBEDRIVER mids, very nice? I heard those years ago wdriven by the TUBEDRIVER amps. Not sure if it is 2.5" depth?
And for a smooth silk tweeter, with upper end extention...I like the MAX FIDELITY MFDT3NEO tweeter:

For $200 you would have a VERY nice and detailed set of speakers. You would just need a good active crossover(Audio Control 24XS is nice) and a good four channel amp. Or you could have passives custom made. Give the specs of the drivers and Madisound can make some up for you.

Or you could buy a cheap but good quality a/d/s/ passive crossover that should work OK. The crossover point is 2.6K:

I used those with the MAX Fi tweets and Illusion Audio mids and thing sounded fine. Not the best option and may not present the smoothes response but works.

Even with the option of building a DIY setup, the Elites still look to be the best choice? ...given my mounting depth limitation

I ran the Morels.....I mean PG elites for awhile. :D

Very high quality. I loved the clear mids but somewhat dissapointed with midbass output. I've heard great things of their system with the 9" midbass with them but didn't want to cut up the interior that much.

The kicker SS series are very narrow as well but never heard them.

Not many he listed is going to fit into the $300 budget, at least not the Focal, DLS or PG Elites. (Doesnt the PG Ti set go for like $1.5 large?)

Actually, all I mentioned are at or below $300. The Elites can...er could a couple weeks ago...be found for $300 on Ebay. Otherwise, I can get them in the high $300s elsewhere online. The DLS PS6 is only $180, Focal around $300.

As far as the TI, maybe the 3 way is $1000 or so, never looked into it with the 9" midbass driver. I don't think a pair of 9s will squeeze into the door, lol.

Hmm, Kicker SS, I'll have to look into those as well, see what I find searching on the other forums.

Oh, quick question about Directed speakers. Any of you listen to their SX650? It's another shallow speaker I came across while searching. I didn't get a whole lot of response for them though, nor hardly a comment.

I was looking at the Illusion Audio stuff too, but from what I've come across, their tweeters aren't that good in their component sets. The drivers have been mentioned as decent though. I'd still consider an option, but there aren't any dealers selling them yet...next month or two maybe...and yes they're back in business.

You are correct, it was the 3 way set up I was thinking of. I think I can hook up the DLS 2way set for around $150.

I have not heard the new Directed stuff but their older stuff sounded like crap in a system I did in a friend SUV. He swapped them out for Infinity Kappa and it sounded better so that tells you how we feel about how bad the Directed stuff was. Ironicaly many loved those speakers???

I talked to Illusion Audio...they don't have any idea when they will release their products....That tells me that it won't be until next year?
There is a guy selling a set over at Elitecaraudio.com I think?
Nevertheless, the Illusion tweeter looks just like the Max Fidelity tweeter but does not sound as good...much duller sounding. Max Fi has a lot of detail.
The Illusion mids are great however.

I would go with the Ti Elites if you can get them....you really can't loose with that option...that set had a list price of $850! Pretty smooth sounding set with the quick listen that I had with them.

If it has to say under 2.5", your only real choice is the PG Elite's/Morel drivers. Theyre good enough for most people - just not my cup of tea, i suppose...

Maybe look into the DLS Iridiums too, but i think those are 2.6" deep...(?)

How deep are those Seas L18RNX drivers? I was glancing at them as a possible diy driver, but I had a hard time finding mounting depth. About all I found was one guy guessing they were in the range of 3" deep, but they don't appear to be that deep to me. Does the aluminum cone sound better than the paper coned CA18RNX?

Yeah, I'm not sure about DLS either in the SQ department. Their Iridium is highly touted. I've come across very little in terms of reviews/comments on the PS6 speakers though. So far I've heard they're OK and quite good but not quite Iridium level. I like that set just for cost really.

I wish some more Elites would come up on Ebay again. It's been a couple weeks since I've seen any. I'd even be open to used ones too...assuming they're still in "like new" conditon.
