Hey i was just wondering what the max efficiency of class a/b amps are.

I ask because i am looking at a gladen xl250c4 it is 241w x4 @4 ohms.
On the spec sheet it says the max power consumption is 89A.

241W x 4 = 964w
89A x 14.4v =1281.6W
964/1281.6 = 75.2%

I thought A/B had a max efficiency at somewhere around 50-60%

Is it possible to be this efficient or is one of those posted specs likely inaccurate?

In theory 78.5% is the max efficiency a class A/B could reach in effiency(solid state only) tube class A/B are much less

Class A/B effiency usually hovers at 40%-60%

I thought that the bias determines a lot of it.

Idling current is also good to know. (Because basically no one plays their systems at 100%.)

At maximum power class A/B can match class D, it is below full power where a switching output amplfier has an advantage with lower losses and higher efficiency.

Okay that makes a lot more sense. Because music is so dynamic you will not see the max efficiency the majority of the time. That's where the 40-60% efficiency comes from.

That also explains why they include an idle power consumption spec while class d does not.

Thanks for clearing that up guys!

Now i just have to see if i can find somewhere to put an amp that big... ?
