Hey folks,

As promised I am going to make a separate review on the set of Morel Ultimo Ti 12-2 subwoofers that I am fortunate enough to trial in my truck for the next couple of weeks. A big thank you to @clange2485 and @Nemesis87 for lending me the gear to make this happen. They have always been a sub I wanted to try out and I am lucky enough to spend some time with them.

I currently run a pair of Audiofrog GB12s.
Product Rectangle Gas Technology Circle

Test enclosure:
2.5 CF net total, 1.25 CF each chamber
Fully treated with Resonix CLD
Polyfill @ (0.8/lb per CF)

Power:
750 Watts @ 2 ohm each sub from Mosconi Pro 5/30s. (Yes, I know everyone says they gobble up power but this should still provide me a flavor of their potential)

Testing I intend to try:
  1. Replace both GB12s with both Ultimo 12s in isolated chambers - most of my time with them will be spent like this
  2. Run 1 GB12 in one chamber and one Ultimo 12 in another chamber - A/B test them with my DSP toggling each channel
  3. Drill out center brace in my sub enclosure to create common chamber and run a single Ultimo 12 - I believe this will allow the Ultimo to really show its low end capabilities.

I will be posting up some measurements today/tomorrow.

This post is to focus on a review of the Ultimo 12, not necessarily a comparison to the GB12. Only comparisons I intend to review are measuring the subs against each other on equal power - aside from that, my focus is providing my subjective thoughts on the Ultimo as an SQ subwoofer.

Shoot me any questions or requests you have for this review. Looking forward to dropping them in later today.

You should build a test box also just to try them in the ideal enclosure size to compare the difference. Stoked for this review.

Potentially if I have some time but drilling the brace out and giving a single 12 2.5 CF should paint a pretty good picture of low end extension.

I am excited as well. They will get ~12 hours of break in time on my drive to Vermont this weekend.

So you're going to change your enclosure to a single chamber?
I also have a Ultimo 12 to test - comparing it to the Focal 10wm and Brax ML10… so let’s see how it compares

Chatting with Nick most likely not - unless I can remove at least 65% SD out of the brace, it’s going to create an internal quasi ported enclosure inside the box which will result in some wonky, ugly resonance.

Plus the the brace is fully covered in CLD which sounds like a nightmare to drill through.

But I have enough extra plywood, killmat and polyfill to probably make a quick 3.0 CF test enclosure that can sit on my back seat/floor.

You didn't ask but I can't help myself...

1st if you do decide to drill the brace then the Ti12 has 73 Square inches of Sd so you need, at a minimum 3 x 2" holes and I personally would like to see at least 4 or more to make sure there's no compression between chambers.

Model Comparison... you knew it was coming.
Transfer Function:
Green = GB12 (0.836 Qtc)
Red = Ti12 in 7.658 CuFt (0.703 Qtc)
Yellow = Ti12 in 1.25 CuFt (1.110 Qtc)
Teal = Ti12 in 3.340 Cuft (0.836 Qtc) - same alignment as the GB12
Colorfulness Product Rectangle Slope Font

Straight to SPL prediction (excursion will take longer to explain) all on 750W - so the expectation will be that the Ti12 should be noticeably louder and even in 1.25 cuft the extension is better - drilled out or test enclosure and the extension really jumps out there...

Excursion Plots (for those of you that got past TLDR)

So even in the 1.25 cuft Hi-Q enclosure WinISD is predicting that you will be able to exceed xmax with 750 Watts so the "hopefully" expectation is that you will be able to tell whether the spider is limiting the cone more than WinISD is predicting or if you are able to exceed xmax and how audible the distortion becomes especially in the bottom octaves where the enclosure is also contributing to limiting the excursion.

When I was planning my build on the Honda, the 8" version was at the top of my list. But I went with the Hertz ml2000.3 instead. I still wonder what if though. But the Hertz has been putting in work withough issue on double the rated power in a tiny box.

Here to see how it goes. But 12.5mm of "Max linear excursion" doesn't sound very fun for a sealed box. But... I could be wrong... like always...😃
Rick. This should be a pretty cool experiment. But I see it leading to you spending more money. Lol

Never heard the Morel, but I have the GB12. Honestly, I have a hard time believing they are worth twice as much, almost twice the space, and almost twice the power. Plus as @ItsonlyaHONDA states 12.5mm excursion. A pair of GBs on only 1k in 3cuft sounds pretty damn good.

Well won't have a ton to offer on feedback yet but we had a little subwoofer showcase today with @Nemesis87 and @teh_squirrel before I dropped the Ultimos into my box.

SQL 12, Oncore 12, Ultimo Ti 12 and Gb12
Trousers Automotive tire Audio equipment Gas Automotive wheel system

Then got the Morels dropped in - they were an easy fit as they are a slightly smaller diameter than the GB 12s. They are gorgeous subs.

So the suspension is still stiff obviously being new so I expect output to drop slightly over the next week (but also expect sub 30hz to become more potent) but this GB12 vs Ultimo on equal power....
Slope Font Parallel Pattern Screenshot

Even if they lose 3db from break in, I am not sure I see the need for adding boat load of power to these things. My 5/30s are still on minimum gain as well.

This is what they look like on my current tune cross electrically at 65, acoustically at 50.

I won't offer up much more than that for now. Only have about 20 minutes with them but they sound excellent so far. Extremely subtle differences.

More to come.

We had a blast messing around with Max in the other vehicles.

I have the 10 Ultimo and it is awesome sub!They are pure SQ subs.
I wouldn’t change mine for anything except Phase Linear Aliante.
Those are similar results that I saw from switching the GB60s for the Thesis. The response/output was very similar but audibly the Sax sound better. Very interesting 😃 nice!!

where in Vermont you going to be? I will be at Lake Dunmore all weekend. Thats central area between Rutland and Middlebury.
