My Alpine 701 won't recognize aux

I can not get the 701 to switch to or even give me the option of auxiliary. I am using it with the controller, 7897, and a hdd5460. I tried the 7897 by itself, no difference. I have slid switches to the correct and incorrect positions, settings on/off, unit resets, removed power. I am not familiar with this setup. The manual says the auxiliary option should be in the menu but it is not. I can not switch to any of the optical or analog inputs. Everything else works great. Please help, with ideas or direct solutions. Thanks.
