I don't think so. I saw a thread a few days ago in new introductions and it was the guys ONLY post. I'm thinking they just need one post to look around (at the classifieds 99% of the time).

If nothing else, have a single thread in new introductions just for this purpose. Combine all of these that are currently going. When someone joins, they are pointed to the suggested first post thread. Unfortunately, I think most of the new users are just looking for deals. Clicking new posts on here now sucks b/c a whole bunch of it is threads like this one.

No, you definately don't have to create a thread. Sticky a first post thread and / or disallow creating a new thread until after a first post.
