...front 3-way stage that is.

I just purchased a 2004 VW R32 which I had intentions of installing a full active 3-way front stage. However, upon analyzing the door setups I do not think I can accomplish this. Hopefully you will be able to see the picture and maybe solve this puzzle.

I cannot glass the A pillers because they have integral airbags inside them.
I cannot attach additional drivers next to the stock speaker location on the door because of two lower electrical controls on the drivers side.
I do not believe I can use HLCD's under the dash. I do not think I have the leg room.

I want to avoid kick panels at all possible for two reasons: (1) The driver's side dead pedal is massive and leaves little room. (2) I have kick panels in my other VW Golf with a tweet and 5.25" and am sick and tired of the soundstage level at my waist and poor midbass response.

The only solution I can think of is cutting into my $850 each door panels to mount a tweet, use the existing stock A-piller triangle location for some Aura 2" mids, and the stock door location for a 6.5". Any other thoughts, brainstorms, or solutions is greatly appreciated!

yeah thats a hard door to mod as it looks like its one peice

and believe me I just cut up my 200 dollars apillars in my 04 just be carefull and dont cut too much in case you have to change it lol

as far as the door a few options


1) if the bottom of the panel comes off you can build that up pretty easy and add mibass, then midrange all together at the bottom

theres a awesome build up on imagedynamics site


2) if not why not just get a [email protected]@ 2 way and mount the tweet up high in the triangle

your car is small enough inside from the ear HT to the door panel that that shoudl raise the stage enough


3) or what about a coaxial mounted mid/tweeter setup


if you can angle the door panel (glass work needed) up towards your ear level you should have a nice stage also

wont defeat teh pathlength difference issues


but it will save you some effort

or look into the dls 8.3 (or 6.3) or the dyn audio x360 sets
that all have dome midranges


or go the DIY route and try the LPG dome mods npdang is blowing out really cheap

I do not think I have the room for a mid in the door, yes, even a 3" mid.

My tweet of choice is a Hiquphon OWII. However, there is no way I'll fit one of those in my car. I really wanted to somehow keep the tweet and mid pretty close together up high. The mid-bass can be anywhere.

As long as you have well-designed components in either case, is there any real advantage to doing a 3-way over a 2-way?

I've always thought a 3-way would be 10X harder to tune than a 2-way due to having so many more variables.

3 ways can be harder to tune. However, if you're doing a DIY setup keep the midbass low pass crossover fairly low. At around 200 hz the frequency becomes rather non-directional, so aiming becomes less of a problem, as the driver can remain off-axis. That leaves you with a smaller driver and tweeter to work on your proper sound stage or imaging. You have a lot more options on where to put a 4" driver than a 6 1/2".

I've found that the higher (level with your ears) you can put your midrange and tweeter the better your soundstage will be. You'll want your midrange on-axis if at all possible (or at least as close as possible). Once again it's much easier with a 4" driver than a 6 1/2" to accomplish this.

generally in most two ways....

to get a center image, you have to swap the phase on one of the mids....and since you're using it for both midrange and midbass....your midbass goes to ****

any of the three ways i have run haven't been "harder" to tune....tuning is tuning....you just do it no matter how many speakers you have....always had better results with 3 ways....
