I have noticed on other forums, that there is quite abit of coin being spent on $500 to $1000 components(hertz,rainbow), and then they post a vid of they're sub system of 4,000 watts juicing 2 18's, mostly rap or hip-hop.

Am I missing something here? Most don't even worry about tweeter and mid position, don't go active, its really mind blowing!


While not a audiophile be any means, this is just really annoying, even laughable!


I bring this up because I listen to mostly to older roots rock reggae and dub from the 60's, 70's, and early 80's. I have heard some of my favorites on nice systems, and let me tell you, the limitations of the recordings shines through. So I stick to midrange stuff, makes no sense to go all out if I don't compete, and in going truly hi-fi and flat when I listen to mostly record rips.


Just curious if anyone else feels the same or has noticed such things

I'm sure most have, but I guess I just came to this realisation


so I'm keeping it simple with a kenwood excelon 593, sax-125.2(canceled my fosgate order for this), pg rsd's(not to shabby for the money)

will probably grab another sax-125.2 and bridge it to a single 12IDQ or 12w3 in a console for my regular cab silverado, who knows

My favorite on another forum was this kid ragging JL audio, yet he had a pair of 18" subs with four Alpine 5x7s for his mids/highs in his Ford Ranger extended cab. I made him mad when I started calling him "Low, low, High, high" since he was ragging on the guy's potential SQ setup.

ETA: I have been blessed with the installer's curse. Every single simple setup I have done for someone else sounds better than my ultra complex setups. So, keeping it simple to start out is what I recommend

I think it is more about spending money, and second about not having to tune as much, and third about them going loud. You certainly don't need expensive drivers for great sound. Many great home speakers were made with cheap drivers. Yet you might blow those drivers if you hammer them to hard. In my experience expensive drivers have a better chance at being easier to tune or are 'pre-tuned' better.

I have had coax that sounded great, I could not match them with comps (well eventually I could have, but the couple sets I tried did not work as well in that car for some reason). But yeah 5x7 is pushing it, I have run some and I'm not that impressed but mostly they just can't make the midbass I want. If he had a pair of 18 running strong there is no way.

First I would like to say something about competing, the guys with the simpler setups are kicking ass!

I'm a firm believer in picking Drivers to suit a specific musical taste. I can't knock a person for liking to thump and bump when that's what they like, however, it's not my cup of tea.

I hear you about keeping it simple. But I also wonder about my local Alpine dealer whom I contacted regarding installing my F1 components. He suggested a simple installation with door pods and the mid and tweeter fairly low in the door. He really balked at my suggestion of dash pods and even kick panels for the mid/tweet. A previous install I had with Hex tweet and mid both in the door had terrible side bias even with extensive TA. So my question is why would you spend thousands on speakers, then just drop them in to the easiest mounting locations with little regard for path length, axis etc?

because my deck doesn't have controls to go active, I opted for the sundowns, I'm sure most know, but they have the ability for going active without the deck, just abit harder to change settings on the fly


I think instead of worrying with the sub for now, I might get a sax-100.4, bridge it down to 2 channels, throw that on a set of diy mids from madi maybe

then i can use the other amp for a nice set of tweets

I'm going to seal and deaden my doors to the best of my abilities pretty soon also, its a learning experience, going to try some flashing before i move up to fiberglass ha ha

I recommend using those plastic house "For Sale" signs for sealing your doors. I was told that they work great and they don't resonate like flashing will...... I won't comment on how to obtain them though:laugh:

I had a custom enclosure put in a shower years back, I saved the scrap for some unknown reason. Anyway, the stuff is 3/16" or 1/4" nylon and its sort of soft. I bet it would be great for door holes. Not sure where one would find it, but those install places likely toss it all the time. I also used it for slides/skids, nylon is a great wear surface on some things. Oh yeah, I put strips under the metal gas tank in a boat because it was wearing into the fiberglass.

I'm careful about how I tune my system for music, I really try to make it flexible because I listen to various stuff and various quality. A big reason why I always can tune from the driver seat, I have a ton of gain on bass and volume. Some CDs have no bass and are quiet, some the opposite. That is the most obvious issue and part of it is compression. Lately I've really been thinking I wish I had a 5 or 7 band EQ on top of the big one in the HU, just to tweak for music on the run. But with my 880 there is no way to do it far as I know. I recall an old kenwood I had with a loop for an EQ that went back into the deck.

i'm sure i could "find" a few, but i know for a fact china-mart has them in hardware, sounds easier than fighting tin snips and rolled up flashing
