So a while back I switched out my headunit for a kenwood in my 2015 tC. Since I was just going to toss out my old unit my friend who has a 2011 tC wanted it. Generally I thought it would be a an easy switch but the wire harnesses are pretty different. Any advice or info on how I can make this work for him?

If it physically fits and there is no databus connection going into the OEM head unit from your 2015, then it could work you just need to find the wiring for both units and match them up which means cutting the stock connectors off which I would never recommend someone doing just so they can have a newer OEM head unit.

I'd say to your friend, go to the store and get a new head unit bud.

And do not throw yours away. Ever.
