I'm installing a car PC in an '05 Subaru Forester, the screen of which will be mounted in a double DIN pod on the dash. I need a single or double DIN head unit with no CD for the dash. Theoretically, I could install an FM receiver in the PC and also use it for volume control, but I'd just as soon have a readily available volume knob from a traditional head unit in the dash.

Are there many simple head units available with no CD player? Anything worth listening to? I don't even need front USB or audio inputs or any of the other bells and whistles, just a single rear auxiliary input.

Alpine has some high quality head units like that. I have no idea what they're called or if they're still being made, but I remember seeing them in stores about 5 years ago. They only do media expansion, radio, and they even have some kind of built-in EQ correction specifically for iPod, and no CD player.
