I get how to test the gain setting with a dmm using a 0db 50hz tone. What I don't get is this:turn “Off ” all processing on the source unit and the amplifier (bass/treble, loudness, EQ.

I'm currently on stock hu and ms8. To "turn off "all processing will I just delete/reset the msb so there is no tune then recalibrate it?

I'm only asking because the 500/1 replaced a fosgate. R500.1. I've got the gain about 3/4 of the way up on the jl and the fosgate was at about 40% and played way louder. Similar amp ratings 450 to 500 w rms. both running the same sub @2 ohms. The only thing I can think of is ,I picked up all the other settings on the jl amp that the fosgate didn't have. But since I'm running an ms8 i don't need to play with any of those right ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. Do you have the input set to Hi or Lo on the amp?
2. Are you running the remote bass knob?

Helpful hint from another 500/1 v2 user...if you use a DMM to adjust the gain, i would use a -10db signal instead of a 0db signal, or just set it by ear.

sounds like you have it set to hi if you are 3/4 of the way up. Try setting it to low, and turning the gain all the way closed...then work it up from there by ear.

On to the question...source unit it your HU, not the JBL...so make sure your HU is set to flat or off on everything that would affect the signal.

Then turn Bass EQ off on the amp.

Yes amp is set to low. I think ms8 is 2 volt. No bass knob wasn't planning on it either. When I was searching around the forum a couples people said to run a -10db. I wonder why jl says not to either way I'll try.

Any idea of where I can get a -10db 50hz tone so I can I guess burn it to a cd? Thanks minisq

I picked up the -10db tone from an autosound 2000 test disk i found online to download. Its on the 104 disc

My guess, it's because the DMM is a flawed method for setting gains. Many DMM are not very accurate, especially if they aren't True RMS, and so the use of 0dB test tones is a fail safe. However, if the DMM were inaccurate in a way that it reads high, then the gain is being set even lower still.

Also, I believe JL doesn't, or at least didn't, ever mention anything about turning the HU to the maximum clean volume ouput, but instead 3/4 volume or something, which doesn't guarantee the signal output is clean.

My 2 cents on the matter.
