Do radar detectors detect emergency vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances? I wouldn't think those vehicles would have active radar to ping.

So is it just local law enforcement you are looking to detect due to having an illegally loud system or what?

If you are looking to get a heads up when any emergency vehicle approaches, perhaps you should get accustom to regularly checking your mirrors (which you should already be doing) and broadening your field of view while driving.

Depends on your budget. The beltronics sti-r and escort 9500ci and laser jammers (made by k40 I think) would be the best setup you can get. A cheaper but still good route would be a Valentine one

What do you think i have been doing so far. Its common sense to do what you just said. I just want a better heads up for emergency vehicles. I read that some of the detectors can detect up to a mile away. That to me is a better way of looking out for emergency vehicles. This way I know there in the area before i even see them. My doors let very little noise into the car and even when the music is at a low volume and windows up i can not hear anything outside. I live in chicago and the police here sometimes will run a redlight and not have there lights on only siren. I belive they dont want anyone knowing there on there way to a scene. Thats why i want a good detector so i know there in the area. Just a added saftey feature that would put me in a better position of awareness.

I read in the news article that the second a cop or emergency vehicle puts its siren on it broadcast a signal that sets of the detectors. Seems like a smart way to let people aware that there in the area

Well, a radar detector will only help if they have their radar active as they're racing across the city.

Still, it's likely to be more effective than sight of eye when in a large city like
Chicago and the Valentine one I know gives you a heads up as to the direction of the approaching radar. Others may well do the same, but I don't know of any off hand. I don't use radar detectors myself, as here in KS were I live, they'd only be of use for someone looking to get away with excessive speeding (which I don't) or something. Line of sight around here give plenty of time to apply the brake and pull to the side of the road. Granted, I hear the sirens (when they're being used), which is probably 90% of the time around here.

Hopefully you are able to find a suitable detector and better yet, I hope you never find yourself in an accident because of an emergency running an intersection you would have otherwise had the right of way. Be it because they failed to use their siren and the intersection had a blind spot or whatever the reason.

No idea if your last statement holds truth, but I could see it being quite smart for emergency vehicles like Fire and Medical. Law enforcement, maybe not so much. I could see it having pros and cons both.

like he said before, it doesnt detect cops. it detects radar signal and laser jammers block incoming infrared light which is what really gets you. theres no getting out of a ticket if the cop has laser and you have no way of knowing. once you can see him, he has you

I think he's saying he wants to know when something like an ambulance comes up behind him so he can pull over.

It sounded to me like the emergency vehicles (of all types) run intersections without sirens in Chicago fairly regularly and he's looking to avoid getting T-boned or vise verse.

Emergency vehicles can change traffic lights by flashing strobe light at certain frequency.
Ever seen little cans on top of traffic lights beams looks like cola can with little nipple parallel to the road on top? that`s the thing. So technically if you record their flashing strobe and calculate frequency they flashing you can make device alerting you of it.
some time ago I experimented with canon flash setting it manually to strobe at different frequency and was able to trigger traffic lights but I abandoned that project.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Z9Pl6H6M0 here is a video of a radar detector doing what i said it does for emergency vehicles. i trying to see which ones perform better and have a better range. in Chicago the cops and undercover cops run stoplights all the time. The cops are very ignorant here. they let the power get to there head. Chicago is hiring practically anybody for police. as long as you pass the academy your a cop but thats a whole different discussion.

They tried....it was/is called SWS.
SWS Alerts Radar Detectors

Some radar detectors can pick it up, but the problem is that emergency vehicles dont transmit it. It wasnt worth the cost.

The best platform for tracking police and emergency type vehicles is an android app called Waze but don't tell anybody, it's supposed to be a secret :)

PD FIRE EMS in some jurisdictions us RF signals to trigger the intersections to control traffic so they have a clean shot and easier and safer for them to get to where they used to be....someone made a RF transmitter to control them in his area but failed....anyways the signal they give off isn't radar at all for those at all. I work in front of a hospital and have fire ems and PD going around all day and doesn't trigger my k40 rl360di (top of line) at all. radar detects radar, if you have lidar receivers and defusers they'll detect laser/lidar too used by police to detect speed..not to alert you of their presence to pull over in emergency so that they can get by
