I have a JL JX 250/1 and a sealed dual 12" box laying around that I'm going to put in my wife's car (that I drive sometimes).

I need two 12's that take around 100-150 watts rms, either S2 or D4 coil. Can anyone recommend decent subs I can buy? I plan to keep this setup, I'm not trying to shatter my windshield or break the bank.

I've researched and looked into the ID12's, JL WX, and Alpine Type-E's. They're all around the appropriate wattage and price is $100 or under. I just wanted to see if there are others I should look into.

Any input is appreciated!

Take a look at:

Infinity Reference (Great budget speakers, would probably like more power than you have but they are still very good)
RE REX series (Probably better in a larger box)
MB Quart Discus series (Good SQ low output great in a small sealed enclosure)

I've ran a Reference 1260w, wasn't bad, but I gave it around rated power. Having two getting around 250RMS would probably be similar in terms of output.

You say you have a dual 12" sealed enclosure, but fail to list internal volume. This is going to be a major player in what subs to go with. Internal volume and depth would both be nice to know.

Also have a pair of Polk MM1240D, but they are rated for more power than you can give and are probably a little above what you were looking to spend.

I may look into the Infinity's, I've been reading up on them for a while. I have a 12" REX but S8 ohm, it's o.k. I appreciate your rec's.

I apologize - The enclosure has .71 cuft per chamber. As mentioned above, I'm going to look more into the Infinity Reference. Thanks for the rec.

Well, your enclosure is a bit on the small side for them, Infinity recommends 1.25cuft (Gross) per sub for sealed. One can use polyfill, but I don't know (read that as doubt) if 3/4 of a pound of polyfil in the enclosure will do the trick.

Also the sub has a mounting depth of 6 3/8", but with it having a rear cooling vent, you need/want at least an extra inch of clearance for proper cooling, so hopefully your enclosure has at least 7 3/8" mounting depth. And you want to make sure no polyfil blocks the vent hole either.

Sadly, I'm not so sure the Infinity is thr "right" sub, though it is a pretty decent sub.

Perhaps maybe the JBL CS1214 instead.

Can't personally comment on them though, never ran a JBL sub and I'm not sure I've ever heard one ran by someone else. I've ran various Infinity, Polk, JL Audio, Kicker, Sony, Pioneer, Soundstream, Boston, Memphis, Radio Shack/Optimus, Lightning Audio, Rockford, Thump, and probably a couple other brands that fail me at this time.

Since you have low power and a small enclosure, I would build baffles to cover each hole and put 2 - 10's in there. They will have a lower roll off meaning they will be less likely to roll off hard at a higher frequency than most people like, and do it with less power. I'm not saying they will be louder, but either way you are not going to get to the xmax of the sub, so this will likely play lower and be easier on your amp.

"Iron Law" suggests that you're going to sacrifice something with small enclosures & low power. Remember, small box, extension, & efficient..... pick the two most important. However, you have already made that choice by using said amp & enclosures. So all that is left is the sacrifice of extension.

Another issue I think may not have been brought up, unless I'm mistaken, is the coil configuration you ask of. The JX250/1 is only 2 ohm stable. While dual 2 ohm coils in series parallel will work, dual 4 ohm will not unless you're will to lose power by having a final 4 ohm load. So dual 4 is out. Dual 2 usually have an extra power handling further reducing what you're able to maximize excursion with.

Thirdly, the subs you have posted up for your consideration still are over twice the handling of what the JX 250/1 can do, not to mention as stated early in my reply, those subs require more airspace than you're offering to achieve a smooth response.

Closest to ideal would be these:

Dayton Audio SD315A-88 12" DVC Subwoofer

Cerwin-Vega XED12 1000W 12" XED Series Single 4 Ohm Subwoofer (power handling is 150)

RE Audio REX12S4 12" REX Series Car Subwoofer - Sonic Electronix (probably most ideal in power & enclosure requirements according to specs)

Personally, I would go for the REX12S4 (not the Version 2), but you may have to look hard. Sonix only shows 1 left in stock. On their ebay site they have a offering of 2 in one auction so it may be best to call & confirm.

Best option for your circumstances would be to drop the dual sub idea. Grab one solid 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm 12" and a box to match. Can get enclosures fairly cheap on Sonix to make a great combo for less than what you may pay for two subs. A single 12" should be plenty for a daily driver.
