So, I have an MBQ OA800 4 channel amplifier rated at 100w rms x4 channels @ 4ohms running to ID CTX65CS and CTX65's. Though the sound is very nice and pretty quiet for a $120 amp, it lacks the volume and power I was expecting, even though its not CEA compliant or have D-Class efficiency. I've heard 75watt amps that would give the OA800 a run for its money.

Not to knock MBQ for their Onyx line, not at all, they're quite good for what they are, just not enough.

So I had decided to move up to their CEA certified Reference series to get a true 125w x4 channel @ 4ohm setup (RA1000.4) and return the OA800 as I'm still within the return period.

Oddly, I'm new to entry level equipment and so I find myself lost trying to form some kind of opinion in regards to sub $200 amps (with the exception of 1 amp, I've never spent less than $400 for any amp but this is for my commuter so I didn't want to spend +$3k plus for my hardware).

So, though I had already decided on the RA1000.4, the Soundstream P4.800 caught my attention, as well as the MA BX4 D-Class and NX4 AB.

The Soundstream is not CEA certified but is rated at 125w x 4channels @ 4 ohms also.

The MA's are rated at 100-120w x4 channels @ 4 ohms and are CEA certified but I'm a bit worried about the NX4 size as I've never seen an AB amp put out that kind of power in that size of a chassis. D-Class amps on the other hand can be ridiculously light and compact.

So here I am, seeking opinions:

MBQ RA1000.4
Soundstream P4.800

Possible Alternatives:
Massive Audio NX4
Massive Audio BX4

What do you guys think? Also, aesthetics are part of the buy in. I'm partial to the simplicity of flat black square amps with little to no color so amps like Awkwardly shaped Sony's and Pioneers overly shiny and weird chassis mounts are out of the question lmao!!!

The amp you already own is capable of driving those speakers to their max output capacity. Changing amps is not going to change the sound.

If you want more volume, it is time to consider adding a subwoofer.

I guess I should have been more specific and detailed about my build.

Talking with Maxxsonics, the OA800 is only built well enough to output just over 80w rms, not the claimed 100w rms.

The CTX65CS/65's are known to be underrated and since I crossover around 80hz, they're not being driven quite as hard as full range... I have seen them take 140w of continuous power (crossed over at 100hz).

My Build:

Stock HU
DQ-61
OA800
BXi1606D
CTX65CS/CTX65
AQ HDC3.112
2.7ft3 custom built box with 3 inch slot port @33hz
16 Gauge wiring throughout
Fully deadened doors, trunk deck/floor/sides (ceiling and floor pan next)
0 Gauge to power distribution block
0 Gauge to ground distribution block
250AMP Breaker under hood
Big 3 (technically 4)
New 250 amp Alternator on the way

All install and box builds by yours truly...

I'm not looking for a change of sound, the MBQ "Sounds" great, just no head room and I'm still under powered...

If i were shopping for a 4 channel amp to power front and rear speakers i would by buying this one hands down...would not even be a question.

http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/car-audio-classifieds/169113-fs-mosconi-one-120-4-amplifier.html

i take that back...dont buy it, because i am still trying to find a way to fit it into my amp rack without having to redo the entire hatch area.:D
That's a helluva find but, its above my budget... I had a set amount of cash and that's a little less than double of what I have left...

But, yeah, I'd be pretty happy about that one

HONESTLY? I'd bite on that deal, no doubt, but its about 25-50w under what I'm looking for.

JL Makes a great product but, I can't stand their pricing... Way too much for so little (not that their products are little in performance BUT compared to their prices, they under perform).

Hey, any opinion on the Soundstream REF series 4 channels? Or Rubicons? Someone was saying they are Hertz clones? I love the REF crossover options and I was around and watching when Soundstream hit its stride in the 90s. No, I'm not old, only 30, just had older friends of the family who were competing hahaha...

But then again, even Crunch was good back then lol!

Hey, the design on the Mosconi looks a lot like the Soundstream TN4.900D... At least it does to me...

Clearly they're not related but, they do look mighty similar

i am not sure i see any similarities to the two amps, but the SS gets great reviews, so if that one fits your needs i think it would be a good choice.

the ref line of mb quart should do you just fine, but it wont be a huge improvement.

Why not look into the ppi fantom or phantom 900.4? lot of power and smallish footprint, as well as well liked on here. It is probably over your budget, but not by much I'd guess.

Otherwise out of what you listed I'd get the 1004

There are a few YouTube video reviews on the Soundstream and one is by Steve Mead if I remember right...

I ended up going with the MBQ RA1000.4 ... A bit power hungry but provides plenty of clean power to my IDs... Plus I got it on sell for $140 Lol! It gets warm but I've yet to be able to over heat it, even after an hour of constant high volume play...

Very quiet, very clean, no doubt it does rated power...
