I would throw some fuses on the wires, but I don't know if that presents any problems or what kind of fuses to use and what not.

The majority just burn em up and buy new ones

U could prolly use a 3 or 5 amp blade type fuse for components and a lightbulb in-line to absorb power going to the tweeters.

It's not a bad practice. Some amps (usually not car audio) come stock with fused outputs.

I'm just not sure what you'd be protecting. Probably your speakers more so than your amp. If your amp is popping an output fuse, it's probably already suffered a catastrophic fault in its output stage -- and transistors pop a lot sooner than fuses do.
